This Walkable Stretch of Shops and Restaurants in Small-Town South Carolina Is the Perfect Day Trip Destination
Charming shops and delicious eats await you on Main Street in this walkable town in South Carolina. Take a fun day trip and experience it for yourself!
I live for a fun day trip in South Carolina. They’re like mini vacations to new destinations, discovering hidden gems that I didn’t know existed. Not to mention that these trips are less costly than a full vacation, and you don’t even have to burn vacation time for them either! In my book, that’s a win-win! They are a great self-care option, too, which is perhaps more important than ever.
That said, if you’re ready for your next day trip adventure, keep the small town of Walhalla in mind. This walkable town in South Carolina is a charming place to shop, eat, and spend time getting to know the locals. Come with us as we browse along East Main Street in the postcard town of Walhalla for this mini adventure in the Palmetto State.
Discover the Delightful City With Small-Town Vibes
Technically, Walhalla is a small city with about 4,300 residents, but small-town vibe is the main character here. It's the kind of place where you're guaranteed to meet locals who will happily share stories of a time long ago. The town was founded in 1850 by German immigrants searching for a new place to call home. If you're wondering about the unique name, you're not alone. In Norse mythology, it means "Garden of the Gods."
Since the town is nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, the settlers believed the name captured the essence of this beautiful place. Today, Walhalla has a quaint pedestrian-friendly Main Street lined with colorful storefronts, cute boutiques, coffee shops, and more, making it perfect for a day trip in South Carolina.
Browse, Shop, Dine, and Explore in Walhalla, SC
Once you arrive in Walhalla, head to Mountain Mocha, a locally-owned coffee house and sweet shop, for coffee and a bite to eat. You may want to double back at a later time for some ice cream, too! Or to check out their selection of cute souvenirs, gift items, and handmade crafts. You could easily spend an hour or more here eating, talking, shopping, or simply sipping a cup of coffee.
Just a few steps away, head into Sunni Ann Mercantile and Sunni's Vintage Shop, and browse "a little bit of everything and a whole lot of Southern." Here you'll find an assortment of gifts, home decor, handmade soaps, housewares, clothing, accessories, farm-to-table snacks, and more. It's the kind of place where you'll walk away feeling like you discovered new stuff for your home.
Fun Fact: This beloved retail store is housed inside the historic 300 Main building, built around 1889 and once operated as a general store, grocery store, drugstore, post office, and a meat market. Although it suffered some damage from a fire, the current structure survived the test of time and certainly has a long story to tell. This hidden gem is a must-visit stop on your day trip to Walhalla.
If you're a bargain hunter, this town has you covered, too. Middle of Main Antiques and Warther's Originals Antique Marketplace, your next stops are full of all kinds of treasures. Here, you'll find antiques, glassware, pottery and crockery, candles, costume and fine jewelry, Coca-Cola and Pepsi collectibles, and more.
One of our final stores to explore on this lovely day trip is Blue Daisies Boutique, with ladies' and men's boutique clothing, jewelry, and gift items. It's the most adorable shop to buy stuff to update your closet. Right next door, I'd also recommend that you step inside the Visit Oconee SC tourism center to learn about more places to visit in Walhalla, South Carolina.
Of course, after this full day of shopping and browsing, you'll need to grab a bite to eat. If you want a quick lunch, take a step back into the 1950s and '60s at Pete's Drive-In, a retro family restaurant where you can have some comfort food and rest your feet. Or stop in for local craft beer and one of the tastiest burgers in town at the Garage On Main.
And be sure to grab dinner at Steph's Steaks. Its Philly cheesesteaks are amazing, the most popular menu item, and you can add toppings to them if you like, which adds extra interest and flavor elements. It will be the perfect ending to this delightful day trip.
Ready to get on the road? Have you ever been to Walhalla and any of these cute shops or restaurants before? Share your experience with us on our nomination page. If you want to stay overnight and head back home the next morning (which I recommend that you do), check out this quaint little cottage not too far from Lake Keowee and just six miles from Main Street! The best part? The next day, you can carve out time to check out the hiking trails, the beautiful Issaqueena Falls, and the tunnel at Stumphouse Park.
