This South Carolina Burger Bar Brings Korean and Latin Flavors to Every Smash Patty

Victor and Ashley Valdivieso, the duo behind the Victor's Lab food truck, opened Smashley's with Asian and Latin flair. The Korean beef burger is the one that makes people come back.

North Charleston has no shortage of casual dining options, but Smashley's Burger Bar at 5401 Netherby Lane stands apart from all of them.

Owner Ashley Valdivieso and her husband Victor built the concept from their Victor's Lab food truck experience, bringing a Latin and Asian flavor sensibility to a smash burger format that would otherwise look conventional.

The result is a locally owned, woman-owned, and Latin-owned restaurant that draws people from across the Charleston region and earned South Carolina's spot on It made the best locally loved burgers in every state.

The food truck background gave the Valdiviesos years of customer feedback before committing to a permanent address. Every item on the Smashley's menu was tested on real customers in real conditions before making the cut.

What to Order

The Korean-style beef burger, with kimchi, cucumbers, crispy mushrooms, pickled red onion, cilantro, soyaki, and sesame seeds, is the signature that best represents the restaurant's identity. It's the most-photographed and most-referenced item in reviews.

The Hot Asian Chick chicken sandwich and a PBR-and-Dr.-Pepper braised chicken burger with mascarpone, parmesan, spinach, and charred scallion mayo are the other most-discussed items.

Bulgogi rice bowls and empanadas for tables that want something beyond a burger. The heat challenge menu escalates through seven levels, with a waiver required for levels 5 through 7. For more on the food scene nearby, see locally owned restaurants in North Charleston.

From Food Truck to Permanent Address

The Valdiviesos built their restaurant on a conviction that the best food comes from genuine creativity and quality ingredients. The 1980s film Cocktail-inspired visual identity and the tongue-in-cheek aesthetic of giant burgers consuming fleeing humans across the Holy City do the branding work.

Tuesday trivia nights and a welcoming community atmosphere have made Smashley's more than a restaurant. It's become a North Charleston gathering place.

Ashley Valdivieso's background in food service, combined with Victor's culinary training in Latin and Asian cooking traditions, produced a menu that's genuinely difficult to categorize. The Korean-style beef burger is American in format and Lao and Korean in flavor. The empanadas are Latin. The heat challenge menu is in its own category entirely.

The restaurant's woman-owned and Latin-owned certifications reflect community values that go beyond marketing. The Valdiviesos have been deliberate about representing those identities in how they operate the business.
