This Secret Swimming Hole in South Carolina is Perfect for an Unforgettable Adventure

This hidden summer spot in South Carolina is perfect for cooling off, with scenic views and a one-of-a-kind swimming experience.

Y’all, I don’t know if I’m going to be able to make it through the heat this summer. It’s already so brutal! While I’m very much tempted to park it inside under my sweet, sweet air conditioner, it’s not exactly the most practical solution. Thankfully, there are so many amazing natural swimming spots in South Carolina that are pure perfection when it comes to beating the heat. If you’ve never visited Brasstown Falls, you’re in for a treat. I think it’s one of the best swimming holes in South Carolina.

What Makes This Spot So Special

Sitting pretty in Oconee, South Carolina, Brasstown Falls is one of the prettiest waterfalls in the state. That’s a big claim, I know. Especially considering Oconee County is home to more than 150 waterfalls!

The falls are surrounded by tall trees, which provide the perfect amount of shade, and overall it’s just a stunning little natural landscape to make a splash in. Brasstown Falls is actually a collection of three waterfalls, and you can enjoy the swimming holes that surround them. The water is cool and refreshing, and generally speaking, it’s one of the lesser-known swimming spots in South Carolina.

How to Get There

The best part about this swimming hole in South Carolina is that it won’t require too much effort to get to. Even though it looks like you’re deep in the Sumter National Forest, you can actually hear the waterfalls from the parking lot. The Brasstown Falls Trail is about a mile long and takes you to a platform to view the falls. Years ago, getting to the base of the falls was rather dangerous and steep, but not anymore! The U.S. Forest Service made some trail upgrades a couple of years ago, including new viewing platforms and stairs to reach the base of the falls.

The wading pool below Upper Brasstown Falls is a perfect spot to cool off on a hot summer day. There’s another calm wading pool below those falls, too. I love having the option to switch swimming areas in case one gets too crowded.

What to Know Before You Go

Since this is one of the best summer spots in South Carolina, it can get crowded on the weekends. If you want the chance to swim alone, try to visit during the weekday or early in the morning.

The hike itself won’t take more than half an hour, but it is rather primitive, with some steep sections (especially for those who want to get to the base of the falls). I’d highly recommend bringing two pairs of shoes: ones you hike in and a pair to swim in. Those rocks around the water can be super slippery.

As far as natural swimming spots in South Carolina go, I don’t think anything tops Brasstown Falls. Add it to your summer bucket list! For more summer adventures, check out our full list of the best swimming holes in South Carolina.
