The 5 Best Outdoorsy Towns to Explore in South Carolina
These five towns will reignite your love for the great outdoors—or at the very least, just being outside.
South Carolina is known for many things: its stunning coastal landscapes, historic sites, and cities so beautiful they constantly rank among the most picturesque in the world. Yet few people would describe South Carolina as outdoorsy, unless, of course, they're locals. Head to the following five outdoorsy towns in South Carolina, where you'll not only be surrounded by the great outdoors, but you'll have direct access to some truly memorable adventures.
1. Walhalla

Tucked away in the mountains of Oconee County, Walhalla is affectionately known as "Main Street to the Mountains," underscoring the town's proximity to and fondness for the Blue Ridge Mountains. Whether you're looking for the perfect base camp for exploring places like Yellow Branch Falls, Stumphouse Tunnel, and Devils Fork State Park, or love exploring local mountain towns, you'll be in good company in Walhalla. One of the best times to visit is in late spring or summer, when you can really enjoy some time in or near the water, whether you're chasing waterfalls, paddling the Chattooga River, or taking a dip in Lake Keowee. Then enjoy an exceptional meal from Stumphaus Taproom, a local favorite serving up favorites like brisket sandwiches and bratwurst.
2. Travelers Rest
Often cited as South Carolina's coolest small town, Travelers Rest has a lot to offer those with an adventurous spirit. To start, there's a trail that runs right along Main Street called the Swamp Rabbit Trail. Biking along this trail, or Gateway Mountain Park, is a signature experience in TR. It's the kind of place where you'll find bikes everywhere; biking is recreation, transportation, and a way of life in this outdoorsy South Carolina town. Plus, some of the region's best parks will be right at your doorstep: Paris Mountain State Park, Jones Gap State Park, and Caesars Head State Park. Of course, you could easily spend all day exploring the very walkable downtown with its tasting rooms, outdoor outfitters, and charming cafes.
3. Georgetown
Georgetown is located at the convergence of four different rivers, meaning your next great paddle is never far away. This charming waterfront community is famous for its preserved architecture and quaint storefronts, but its recreational opportunities are just as impressive. Wondering where to begin? South End Adventures offers kayak tours (and surf lessons!) for anyone who wants to explore the lovely waterways. Another not-to-be-missed experience is touring Kaminski House Riverside Gardens, where you can admire old live oak trees and stunning views of the Sampit River.
4. Landrum

Just a stone's throw away from the North Carolina border, the town of Landrum is a quiet mountain town that doesn't necessarily fit the mold of other South Carolina destinations. Walking down Trade Street, you'll be charmed by the antique shops, cafes, and storefronts that line the street. But like most, you'll be drawn towards the mountains, where the Blue Wall Preserve offers 575 acres of protected land to explore. When you're ready to re-fuel, head to the Hare and Hound for an excellent happy hour and a to-die-for pimento cheeseburger, all enjoyed out on the lovely patio.
5. Seneca
Seneca isn't exactly a tiny town, but because it's just seven miles from Clemson, it often gets overlooked as a memorable day trip destination. But that's exactly what makes it so special—it flies under the radar. Those who visit will find themselves perfectly situated to some of the state's best outdoor attractions, namely, Lake Jocassee, Lake Keowee, and even the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It's the kind of place where you can go hiking, paddling, and even diving on the same day. (Lake Jocassee is famous for its underwater relics from former towns that were flooded to create the reservoir.)
So whether you're seeking an adrenaline-pumping adventure or perhaps just a gentle stroll down Main Street, these five towns are perfect for a day spent outside. Looking for related content? Take a look at this list of towns in the US that are perfect for a day trip.
