Loudonville

Loudonville is known as the “Canoe Capital of Ohio” and is the ideal outdoor destination for all things water-related. Start your adventure off at Mohican State Park and enjoy the endless hiking trails, or rent a cabin and sleep right in the heart of the park. Since canoeing is such a part of this outdoorsy town in Ohio, be sure to rent a canoe from an outfitter and enjoy the offensively beautiful views along the Mohican River.  

Athens

Athens has a reputation as a college town, but don’t underestimate it for outdoor adventure. Surrounded by the expansive terrain of the Wayne National Forest, Athens is one of the best outdoor towns in Ohio. Stroud Run State Park offers a wide range of hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding trails to enjoy, and the lake has your back for all your aquatic adventure needs.

Peninsula

Sitting pretty in the heart of Cuyahoga Valley National Park, it’s easy to see why this small town is one of the best outdoorsy towns in Ohio. Cyclists will thoroughly enjoy taking the 93-mile Towpath Trail, which connects Cleveland to Bolivar (don’t worry; you can ride a section of it; you don’t have to tackle the entire trail). Brandywine Falls is one of the area’s most popular attractions, and this 60-foot waterfall is easily accessible via a scenic 2.5-mile loop trail. 

You’ll honestly never run out of things to do at Cuyahoga Valley National Park. From seeing the Ledges to admiring the covered bridges, it’s truly a nature lover’s paradise. 

Yellow Springs

Known as one of America’s coolest small towns, Yellow Springs truly does offer a little bit of everything. The town has deep roots in social activism, an inclusive arts scene, and a strong cycling culture, all surrounded by thousands of acres of protected nature reserves. The 1,000-acre Glen Helen Nature Preserve is a natural playground for outdoor adventure, offering 15+ miles of trails that weave throughout the limestone cliffs, the iconic yellow spring, one of the most impressive beaver dams you’ll ever see, and an incredible raptor center that’s home to more than 20 native raptors. Bird nerds, you’re going to love it. 

Speaking of limestone cliffs, John Bryan State Park is also in Yellow Springs, and the park’s outstanding scenery is worthy of a road trip from any corner of the state. View the breathtaking limestone gorge and then maybe do a little fishing in the Little Miami River. 

Logan

Last, but certainly not least, we have Logan. This small town in Ohio is the primary access point for the iconic Hocking Hills State Park, one of the best places for nature lovers. Between exploring 100-foot-deep caves and 120-foot waterfalls, you’ll never be bored at Hocking Hills State Park. Of course, Hocking Hills is just the tip of the iceberg in this part of Ohio. Carve out some time to explore Conkle’s Hollow State Nature Preserve, Rockbridge State Nature Preserve, and Lake Logan State Park while you’re in the area.
