But if what you're after is a quieter, more authentic experience, a trip to McCormick might just be the perfect answer. The town and its surrounding county are known as the "Gem of the Freshwater Coast," and it's easy to see why. What to Do in McCormick
With a population of just around 2,000, McCormick is a small town in every sense of the word. But its downtown is the perfect spot to explore before or after spending time out on the lake. Wondering where to start your day? Grab a great cup of coffee at Coffee HQ on Main Street, and if you're hungry, you can order a cinnamon roll or another homemade pastry. Stop by in the middle of the day to enjoy a sandwich or a chili dog with a side of their famous sweet potato fries. Next, to understand a bit of the town's history, check out the historic train depot, built in 1911. It offers a snapshot of the town's railroad heritage. In fact, at one point in time, as many as eight trains would arrive daily in this town.
Of course, no trip to McCormick is complete without venturing outside of town just a bit to explore the stunning Hamilton Branch State Park. It's situated on a peninsula that's part of the 70,000-acre Lake Thurmond. It isn't your typical state park in that it isn't famous for its hiking trails, but rather for its expansive views of the lake and all kinds of water-fueled adventures. The signature experiences here are boating and fishing, although there is a short bike path that connects to the Stevens Creek Bike Trail. Then, after spending time in the great outdoors, check out the park's General Store, where you can enjoy some old-fashioned candy, ice cream, or soda.
