One of the Most Beautiful Lakes in South Carolina Is Surprisingly Overlooked

South Carolina is certainly spoiled when it comes to our many waterways, rivers, and lakes. Lake Murray, Lake Hartwell, Lake Keowee, and the iconic Lake Jocassee are easily some of the most popular lakes in South Carolina to enjoy on a hot summer day. Of course, their popularity comes with large crowds during peak seasons. If you want to escape the crowds, find yourself a hidden lake in South Carolina to enjoy. Lake Warren is one of my favorites, and it might soon be yours, too!

What Makes This Lake So Beautiful

You’ll find Lake Warren (also known as Lake George Warren) tucked away in Lake Warren State Park in the South Carolina Lowcountry. As one of the lesser-known state parks in South Carolina, it often goes overlooked, and that’s a shame! The lake and surrounding park were named after the South Carolina Senator, George Warren. The 200-acre lake is one of the best fishing spots in South Carolina, and the park itself offers a quiet escape into South Carolina’s beautiful natural landscape. It’s a place where you can free yourself from the crowds of the more popular lakes in South Carolina without compromising on activities or scenery.

What You Can Do at This Lake

Fishing is one of the best things to do on Lake Warren. Largemouth bass, catfish, and bream are what most anglers are after, and you can fish from the piers or from a boat. There are two fishing piers at Lake Warren State Park, plus two boat ramps. The park also offers fishing boat rentals that are available for day use, which include a trolling motor, life jackets, and paddles. 

While it may be tempting, swimming is not allowed. As with many blackwater lakes in South Carolina, there can be (and probably are) alligators that call the lake home. Keeping this in mind, the park is pet-friendly, but it’s important you keep your pup on a leash and don’t let them splash around in the water. 

There are a handful of hiking trails in the park that weave throughout the park’s landscape and offer up even more unique views of this scenic lake in South Carolina. As you wander through the park, you could easily see some of the local wildlife, including deer, armadillos, possums, and raccoons, plus your usual swamp critters like turtles and alligators.

What To Know Before You Go

In addition to the 200-acre lake, there’s also a smaller, two-acre lake at Lake Warren State Park. Often filled with lily pads, it’s a perfect spot to do a little birdwatching. Watch the water long enough, and you’re sure to spot a bird swoop down for a snack or two.
