Visit the Hidden Gem Small Town Right Next Door to Rollins State Park
Mountain adventures, historic landmarks, and a wonderfully unexpected telephone museum are just a few reasons to explore this small mountain town.
Nestled on the south slope of Mt. Kearsarge, Rollins State Park is a must for any mountain lover out there. But there's another reason to venture to this corner of New Hampshire: the delightful town of Warner. This small town near Rollins State Park offers that quintessential New England small-town experience—it even has a covered bridge! Despite being a quiet rural town, it's bursting with community events and seasonal festivals, plus charming shops and historic mercantiles to admire along Main Street.
Why This Town Is the Perfect Base for Rollins State Park
Geographically, Warner couldn't be much closer to Rollins State Park; you can get to the park entrance in less than 10 minutes by car. The town enjoys the same natural backdrop as the state park, too, reminding you that mountain adventures are never too far away. Plus, driving from Main Street to the park is a picturesque adventure, marked by simple, scenic roads that eventually lead up to Mt. Kearsarge. The mountain sits at 2,937 feet above sea level, and unlike other peaks in New Hampshire, it seems to sit off by itself.
What To Do in Warner
Warner is easy to love. To start, its Main Street is wonderfully walkable, with historic gems and friendly shops all laid out conveniently for locals and travelers alike. We recommend starting your day at Cafe One East, famous for its made-to-order breakfast sandwiches and great coffee. But if you happen to stop by on a Saturday, you're really in luck, because this is when the cafe sells its legendary cinnamon rolls. Next up is a quirky, unexpected attraction: the New Hampshire Telephone Museum. Touring the exhibit, you'll gain a newfound appreciation for just how far communication technology has come over the past century—from hand-cranked phones all the way to today's smartphones!
But if there's one quintessential Warner experience, it's summitting Mt. Kearsarge. To do this, you can make the quick drive to Rollins State Park. From the main parking area, it's just half a mile up to the mountain peak. Of course, if you'd prefer a more challenging trek, you can start further down the hill and climb all the way. Once at the top, you'll enjoy an inspiring, panoramic view that, on a remarkably clear day, can let you see all the way to Boston!
Where To Stay Nearby
Travelers looking to spend a few days exploring Warner and Rollins State Park will be positively charmed by the Follansbee Inn. It's just a bit outside of town in the neighboring village of North Sutton, but the extra few minutes in the car will be well worth it. The inn is perched on the shores of Kezar Lake, giving guests beautiful views and access to endless water adventures. (You can borrow a kayak, canoe, or stand-up paddleboard!) But the real reason guests keep coming back to the Follansbee Inn might just be the breakfasts, which are made from scratch every day and have a creative Cajun twist.
What To Know Before You Go
As you can see, Warner is an excellent day trip destination, and it really is lovely year-round. The town is at its busiest during the fall, hosting the famous Warner Fall Foliage Festival. If you prefer a quieter experience, consider a late spring visit.
