5 Charming Florida Towns Surrounded by Outdoor Adventure

Discover five charming Florida towns where outdoor adventure is always nearby, from scenic hiking trails and crystal-clear springs to kayaking and wildlife.

From white, sandy beaches to scenic coastal trails and crystal-clear natural springs, Florida is filled with countless destinations that invite you to spend a day outdoors. Whether you want to splash in the waves, paddle across calm waters, observe wildlife, or even hike along forest trails, you'll find no shortage of places to explore in the Sunshine State. However, with so many places waiting for you, it can be overwhelming to know where to start. To help, here are five outdoorsy towns in Florida that make the perfect starting point for your next adventure.

1. Cape San Blas

Many of Florida’s beaches can be crowded, making your day outdoors miserable. Cape San Blas is one of those hidden gems for beachgoers. This town of approximately 600 residents (this number grows significantly with seasonal visitors) lies on a secluded peninsula in the panhandle known as the “Forgotten Coast.” Here, you can relax, walk, wade, or paddle on the picture-perfect white sand or even take a horseback ride along the shore—which is particularly stunning at sunset. For less sand but gorgeous views, walk, run, or cycle along the Loggerhead Trail, a nearly 9-mile paved pathway that runs along the Cape.

2. High Springs

Known as the “Gateway to the Springs,” the town of High Springs in northern Florida is an absolute must-visit and the ultimate base camp. This area is home to the largest concentration of freshwater springs in the U.S., which are each crystal-clear and maintain 72 degrees Fahrenheit year-round. However, the natural springs are just the beginning, as High Springs also sits along the Santa Fe River, offering incredible kayaking and cave diving opportunities.

3. Crystal River

Crystal River may be known as a popular retirement destination, but it’s also the Manatee Capital of the World. This town of approximately 3,600 residents sits on the Gulf and is best known for the natural springs where you can kayak, swim, and snorkel, and is the only place in North America where it is legal to encounter manatees in the wild. Of course, this is just the beginning of things to do as the summer months provide excellent scalloping opportunities, and places like Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park allow you to observe all types of animals, from endangered Florida panthers to alligators.

4. Mount Dora

Mount Dora is much larger than the other towns on our list, but we couldn’t overlook it. This small city is unique when compared to many other outdoorsy towns in Florida, as it sits approximately 184 feet above sea level and features hilly terrain. It also sits next to Lake Dora, where we strongly recommend you take a Dora Canal Boat Tour, a scenic ride through one of the country's most beautiful waterways. You can even spend a night under the stars camping at nearby Trimble Park or lace up your hiking boots and tackle a trail at Palm Island Park.

5. Islamorada

alt

Islamorada is a popular vacation destination, and it’s easy to see why. Located on the Florida Keys, this town is bucket-list-worthy for photographers searching for scenic ocean views. It’s also known as the Sport Fishing Capital of the World and is an excellent spot for diving in the coral reefs. If you want to spend time on the shore, you can relax on the warm and shallow Anne’s Beach or head to places like Indian Key Historic State Park, a destination only accessible by boat where you can step into history, swim in the warm waters, and potentially spot wildlife.

This is just a handful of the best outdoorsy towns in Florida—there are many more we could add. Whether you want some time on the water, along a scenic hike, or simply surrounded by scenic views, these outdoor communities offer plenty of inspiration for some time away. So, get outside, enjoy the sunshine, and start planning your next visit to the best nature towns in Florida.
