Discover This Underrated New Hampshire Town Full of Quirky Charm
From unexpected roadside attractions to retro eats, this small New Hampshire town is packed with offbeat finds, quirky sights, and plenty of personality.
What do you think of when someone brings up the word “Salem?” Witches, ghosts, ancient graveyards? You can find all of these scary sights and more in the city of Salem, Massachusetts, but if you choose to travel just north of the Bay State border, you will discover a quirky town in New Hampshire that also goes by the same name. A trip to this smaller Salem offers visitors a unique blend of strange outdoor attractions, vintage shopping, retro eats, and unusual spa treatments.
Where Is Salem and Why Is It So Unique
You won’t find a lot of witches in Salem, New Hampshire, but the town is sure full of off-the-beaten-path places. Located right on the border of New Hampshire and Massachusetts (roughly 25 miles from Boston), Salem is technically a town, but has the feel of a small city. The town's most popular tourist attraction is Canobie Lake Park, a family-operated amusement park that has been around for well over a century. While I highly recommend riding the park coasters, there is so much more to see in Salem.
The Quirky Attractions That Define This Town
1. America's Stonehenge
The town’s most unusual attraction is one that made it to my list of 26 Exciting Things To Do in New Hampshire. Discover over 4,000 (possible) years of history when you take a trip to explore the ancient rock formations at America's Stonehenge. Take a self-guided half-mile hike to see underground stone chambers, astronomical monoliths, and a strange sacrificial table. There is also an on-site visitor’s center/museum where you can learn even more about these fascinating archaeological wonders and then decide for yourself how they came to be.
2. Salem Flea Market
If you are a sucker for antiques and second-hand finds (my favorite), you will definitely want to make a stop at the Salem Flea Market. This gigantic indoor/outdoor venue is open on weekends year-round and has been in existence for over 40 years. Clear a few hours of your day and thrift collectibles, furniture, jewelry, and everything else you never knew you needed.
3. MaryAnn's Diner

After all of that walking and shopping, you will probably need a good, hearty meal to keep your energy going. Well, you are in luck, because Salem is home to the fantastic retro-style MaryAnn's Diner. Fill your belly with killer breakfast favorites, specialty sandwiches, burgers, and decadent desserts. And don't forget to wash your meal down with a classic milkshake!
4. Bien Soign Salt Cave
And now it is time to relax. End your visit to this hidden gem town in New Hampshire with a one-of-a-kind spa treatment at the Bien Soign Day Spa. At this superior wellness center, you can reap the health benefits of a salt cave treatment while joining special events such as sound healing, meditation, and yoga. Or if you desire a more traditional spa treatment, opt for a rejuvenating massage, facial, or pedicure.
What It’s Like to Visit
Salem is a wonderful town to visit any time of the year. Please be aware that the area around Canobie Lake Park does become congested during the summer months, so plan your visit accordingly.
