Everyone Always Goes to Coney Island in New York: Go Here Instead

When it comes to New York beaches, there are always the headliners — if you come from upstate, you're likely headed to Lake Erie, and if you're from the city, the wonderful chaos of Coney Island awaits those seeking fun in the sun. But the crowds get pretty intense at the top locations during this time of year, which is why I love to head to the best hidden beach in New York during the summer. The best part is, it's only a train ride away, and then you find yourself in a 6.5-mile wonderland that feels as far away from the hubbub of the city as possible.

Jones Beach is located on Long Island, on a barrier island hugging the southern shore but far closer to the city than famous spots like the Hamptons. It's close enough for a day trip, but is located in a part of Long Island that still hasn't been overdeveloped, allowing for a more peaceful, nature-focused day on the beach. There are some times I'm in the mood for a big, fun day on the city's wildest boardwalk, but after that, Jones Beach is the perfect refresher during the summer months.

Why Coney Island Gets So Crowded

Coney Island isn't so much a beach as an attraction, home to the biggest and wildest amusement rides in New York State. The world-famous Cyclone anchors the skyline at Luna Park, and the place is usually packed as soon as the weather gets warm. I love to visit it — in the spring or fall, when the area is still in full swing, but before or after the summer throngs arrive and ensure long lines for everything.

The Beach You Should Visit Instead

When summer calls, I usually dream of something much more laid-back. That's why I love Jones Beach, accessible from the Babylon Branch of the Long Island Rail Road or less than an hour's drive from the city. You'll know you've arrived when you see the Jones Beach Water Tower, the town's obelisk-like landmark towering over the coast.

What to Expect When You Visit Jones Beach

Jones Beach is adjacent to Wantagh, one of Long Island's most charming towns. The town is a hub of dining and culture, with Mulcahy's being a popular spot for live music. The Jones Beach Hotel is one of the best boutique hotels on Long Island, but be warned — it will book up quickly during the summer months.

The biggest selling point of the area, however, is the beach itself. Jones Beach spans over 6.5 miles, with the heart of it being a two-mile boardwalk that can be easily hiked by anyone with a good pair of shoes. You'll come across fishing piers, photo ops, and some great quiet beaches where you can sit back and watch the tide roll in.

Tips for Visiting This Hidden Gem

Jones Beach State Park is definitely one of the best state parks in New York, and access is free if you're coming by public transportation. The fee for driving into the park is $10 during the summer and $8 during the off-season. The beach is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day, and you can usually enjoy the water from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. during the summer season.
