Farmingdale is a Walkable Town in New York Known for its Great Dining and Amusements
Even away from the city, it's easy to find a walkable town in New York, and I had a great time exploring Farmingdale's main corridor.
Many times, when I travel, I go to an out-of-the-way destination. After all, I am the guy who went all the way to Edmonton to visit its giant mall! But this goes for more local destinations, too, and before I travel, I always research to make the most of my visit. That was the case for one great walkable town in New York — Farmingdale, located on the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) line to Long Island.
A Walkable Town in New York That You Can Get to by Train
The suburban town of Farmingdale has a great shopping and dining district and a surprising and historic amusement park, the main reason I visited. As someone who doesn't drive, I found the town surprisingly easy to navigate. I got off the train (about an hour from Penn Station) and walked right into downtown. If you're okay with an extended walk, you can see the entire town on foot. Along the way, you'll find plenty of surprises.
When walking, I noticed that many of the homes had a historic look, adding to the area's character. As it's a suburban area, homes and businesses often have sidewalks in front of them. I felt very safe and welcome while exploring.
Adventureland Is a Must-See Long Island Amusement Park
I came here mainly because of Adventureland, a seasonal theme park that opened in 1962. Ideal for families with kids, Adventureland has a log flume and dozens of rides, including some elite roller coasters. It is also home to Mystery Mansion, a haunted house dark ride that I rode several times.
Visitors especially love just how many kid-friendly attractions and rides there are. Another plus? The lines are usually not too long, meaning the little ones in your crew won't have to test their patience!
Shopping, Dining, and Delightful Finds in Farmingdale
Farmingdale offers excellent shopping, featuring a mix of small businesses and famous chains. I visited Stew Leonard's, a fan-favorite supermarket chain with singing audio animatronics. The town is also home to Back in Time, an antique shop and cafe with friendly owners and a huge selection.
Of course, I never visit a town without checking its restaurant selection. Farmingdale has various dining destinations, from fine dining to casual wing spots. I ate at a delicious Thai joint near the train station, but I'm also intrigued by Haunted House of Hamburgers, a kitschy Halloween-themed burger joint.
Have you visited Farmingdale? If not, tell a friend so you can visit and explore this walkable town in New York. And be sure to check out the amusement park's seasonal hours on the official Adventureland website. If you hope to stay for more than one day, check into one of the area hotels, such as the Courtyard by Marriott Republic Airport Long Island/Farmingdale, close to the town center. For related content, take a look at these three New York towns so dreamy, you'll swear you've seen them on TV.
