This Charming South Carolina Town Is Picture Perfect For An Autumn Day Trip

There are so many historic small towns you could likely take a day trip to a different one every weekend for several years just to see them all. But not this day. Today we're focusing on just one. So put on your walking shoes and let's head to the historic upstate town of Walhalla, South Carolina.

Walhalla is an exciting small city of under four thousand people in beautiful Oconee County.

The community got its start in the mid 1800s when German immigrants settled here. One of them, John A Wagener would become a Confederate General in the Civil War.

A walk around this historic town today doles out a look into the history of the community. There's a cherished graveyard in town with graves dating all the way back to the the Civil War, and forward to present day.

The city is filled with lovely historic buildings and churches, many with a German architectural influence.

Main Street also has some wonderful places to eat. Palmetto Sweets & Company will satisfy your need for lunch as well as your sweet tooth.

Part of the South Carolina Parks system, Oconee Station State Historic Site in Walhalla is stunning any time of year. Visit in the fall and you'll be surrounded by amazing colors.

The site includes a trail to a beautiful waterfall, Station Cove Falls, which is also picture perfect in the fall!

No trip to Walhalla would be complete without heading about six miles north of town to explore Stumphouse Mountain Tunnel. This time of year bring a jacket as well as your flashlight.

Tunnel Park has much more to do and see than just the incomplete rail tunnel from the 1800s.

Find the sign for the short trail to Issaqueena Falls and make your way to yet another of Oconee County's famous waterfalls.

The gorgeous Issaqueena Falls is beautiful from the top as well as the bottom, but be extra cautious making your way to the bottom.

Whether you say "Walhalla" or "Valhalla, which is closer to the traditional German pronunciation, is up to you. Either way, Walhalla, South Carolina is the perfect place to spend a fall day.
