When it comes to finding the most haunted places in NM, the Dawson Cemetery is definitely a contender for the top spot. A former coal mining town near Cimarron, Dawson was virtually obliterated in a horrific 1913 mining accident. The mine exploded, killing over 250 workers. Today, a cemetery is all that remains of the town. Brave souls who have visited the cemetery at night recall seeing lights - much like those on the front of mining hardhats - and even apparitions wandering amongst the tombstones. You'll never catch a New Mexican at White Sands National Monument after dark. Why? That's when the ghost of the Great White Sands, Pavla Blanca, comes out to wander the dunes. Legend has it, a Spanish conquistador by the name of Hernando de Luna left his lover, Mañuela, in Mexico City to embark on a quest for the Seven Cities of Cibola, which were supposedly rife with treasures. He was ambushed by Apache warriors and died somewhere in the Great White Sand, leaving his beloved to roam the park endlessly in search of him.

There are several haunted hotels in New Mexico, and one of the most notorious of them all is the Hotel Parq Central in Albuquerque. Originally a hospital for railroad workers, the building was converted into a psychiatric facility in the 1980s before finally becoming a hotel. With so much tragedy surrounding it, one can only imagine how many ghosts roam the halls here. Even the psychiatric patients complained of strange happenings - their bedsheets were often pulled off of them in the middle of the night!
