Wadboo Creek is a part of the Berkeley Blueways, a system of 24 paddling trails in Berkeley County with over 225 miles of navigable waters. It has historical significance as the site of an attack on Brig. Gen. Francis Marion and his militiamen by the British in 1782.
Today, Wadboo Creek is used for recreation, including kayaking, canoeing, and fishing. One of the most beautiful paddles in the state, Upper Wadboo Creek is a lovely, old cypress swamp with massive trees.
Well, hello there! The area is full of wildlife, and you very well could see various types of heron ...
... gators ...
... and owls!
The overall scenery will be different depending upon the time of year of your paddling adventure.
Golden Club, an aquatic plant, is commonly seen in the spring or summer season, as it grows in bogs or shallow water, slow-moving streams, swamps, and pond margins in water one to twelve inches deep with leaves floating on the surface.
On sunny days, watch the light sparkle and dance on the surface of the water and soak in the warmth of the sun's rays.
If you love brilliant fall foliage, you'll want to plan your adventure accordingly!
And while the backdrop during the winter months may be a bit more subdued, your chances of seeing more wildlife are higher with less foliage and lower water levels.
This adorable river otter was spotted out for a swim on a January Upper Wadboo Creek paddling tour with Blueway Adventures.
And it's not uncommon on South Carolina's milder winter days to see turtles sunning on tree branches.
