If you want an experience you'll never forget, then hop in the car and head to Edisto Island. There's a South Carolina tree tunnel out there that is positively magical and believe me, it's worth the trip. Head out to Edisto Island on SC-174 and then make a left onto Botany Bay Road. Your adventure begins a couple of hundred yards up the road at one of the most magical places in South Carolina.
Just before you enter the "tunnel of trees" you'll encounter Allen AME Church, founded in 1876. It's a quaint little find and worthy of a stop.
You may want to stop on your way back, since from here you'll be able to see that tunnel of trees you drove all the way out here to see and you'll want to head that way asap.
Turn the bend beside Allen AME Church and you'll be inside this incredible tunnel of trees in South Carolina.
It's an absolutely stunning drive as you pass under a canopy of intertwined live oaks. Take your time, even if someone is behind you - chances are that they will want to take their time as well.
There's much to see along the way as you slowly meander to the end of the road.
Eventually, you'll get to a right turn where you'll find a parking lot ahead.
Park and follow the footpath toward the ocean. It's about four-tenths of a mile, but again, worth the effort.
Botany Bay is famous for its two miles of remote beachfront wilderness, lined with palmettos and stranded trees. It's one of the most beautiful parks in South Carolina.
When you leave the beach and are back in your car, take your first right to see even more, including the historic outbuildings of Bleak Hall Plantation.
Botany Bay Plantation was formed in the 1930s from combining Bleak Hall Plantation and Sea Cloud Plantation.
Among the things to see, the Icehouse is the most photographed. There's also a gardener's shed. Both are thought to date back to the 1840s.
With so much to see and do at the end of the tunnel of trees, you may forget, and then be pleasantly surprised, that when you get in your car to leave you'll get to pass through this magical South Carolina tree tunnel all over again!
You may be surprised to learn South Carolina has more than one tunnel of trees. Have you had the pleasure to pass through this South Carolina tree tunnel on Edisto Island? We'd love to know in our comments!
