This North Dakota Landscape Is a Serene Frozen Wonderland During Winter

Lovers of the natural world in winter, this one's for you: Lake Audubon is North Dakota's most beautiful lake when it's chilly out.

Did you know North Dakota is home to more than 400 known lakes, many (if not most) of which are named and established? It's true, and Lake Audubon is one of the most notable. Located within the Audubon National Wildlife Refuge, this stunning North Dakota lake is everything you could ever ask for... all year round.

I know what you might think: "No way, not in the winter." That, friend, is where most folks are sorely mistaken. As it turns out, Lake Audubon only gets better in the winter, thanks to a noticeable lack of crowds and a wintery wonderland vibe it takes on from the very first snowfall.

At its deepest, Lake Audubon is about 60 feet deep. The average depth is only around 19 feet, making it much more shallow than wide. At 16,612 acres, it's enormous, and when it's frozen over, it takes on an especially beautiful atmosphere. I recommend bringing your favorite camera, as wintertime in North Dakota is a photographer's dream, and visiting Audubon Lake is one of the best things one can do for themselves.

There are many things to do at and on the lake, even when it's frigid. One of the most popular activities on Lake Audubon in the winter is ice fishing, and hunting for deer, pheasants, and other game is also popular. Occasionally, birders can see some rare species that take up residence in or pass through the area. Wildlife lovers will also find plenty to adore.

For me, views of the frozen lake take my breath away. I'm not even sure what it is, but there's something about the wonders of the lake in winter that draws me in each and every year. Crowds are smaller during this time, though it's not uncommon to see folks from various natural groups and clubs out and about enjoying the winter wonders. Park Rangers also enjoy nature-spotting, so feel free to ask questions if you find someone around!

If you'd prefer not to leave for a little while (and I don't blame you), the East Totten Trail Campground offers year-round camping and wintertime ice fishing. With 30 electric campsites and 10 primitive campsites, you can't go wrong; there's also a boat ramp, a cleaning station, vault toilets, and more. It's a delight; just dress warmly and stay bundled up!

When it comes down to it, the list of natural wonders in North Dakota is lengthy and seems to never end. The Peace Garden State is filled top-to-bottom with incredible things to do, especially in the winter. Yes, it gets incredibly cold here, but that's okay - the folks who call this place home are hardy and know how to enjoy the great outdoors when temperatures plunge below zero. It's an honor to live here and explore it in the winter.

So, there it is: one of my all-time favorite hidden gems in North Dakota that simply gets better when it's chilly out. Lake Audubon is an amazing place, and as one of the best natural wonders in North Dakota, you can't go wrong with a day trip (or longer).
