Visit the Hidden Gem Small Town Right Next Door to Icelandic State Park

Discover a charming small town near Icelandic State Park that’s perfect for your next getaway, with great stays and easy park access.

North Dakota is chock-full of incredible state parks. There’s Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park with its reconstructed military post and sweeping prairie views. Then there’s Icelandic State Park, where wooded trails, the shores of Lake Renwick, and the surprisingly lush Gunlogson Arboretum feel a world away from what most people picture when they think of North Dakota. Just a few minutes down the road from all of it, you'll find Cavalier, a small town that turns a State Park day trip into a weekend that you won't want to end.

Why This Town Is the Perfect Base for Icelandic State Park

Located about 6 miles east of Icelandic State Park, Cavalier gives visitors something many park towns struggle to offer: enough to do once you're finished hiking.

At first glance, Cavalier looks exactly how a northeastern North Dakota county seat should look. Grain elevators rise above the skyline. Historic brick buildings line the streets. Pickup trucks outnumber luxury SUVs by a comfortable margin. Spend a little time here, though, and the town starts revealing its personality. (That's partly because Cavalier has lived several different lives.)

Founded in 1875, the community grew as an agricultural hub for Pembina County. Then came the Cold War. Construction tied to the nearby missile defense program transformed the area and briefly sent the population soaring. Today, the Cavalier Space Force Station is about 14 miles southwest of town, creating one of the more unexpected facts you'll learn on a trip that otherwise involves birdwatching and nature trails.

For travelers looking for a small town near Icelandic State Park, the location is hard to beat. You can spend the morning exploring Lake Renwick, walking through the arboretum, or watching for wildlife along the park's trails and still make it back to town in time for lunch. And lunch is totally worth making time for.

What To Do in Cavalier

At Thompson's Cafe, the menu leans into exactly what people hope to find in a small-town diner. Burgers, pizza, chicken dinners, and portions that don't require a magnifying glass. As someone who considers nachos a perfectly reasonable basis for restaurant evaluation, I'd be ordering the Super Nachos without hesitation.

A few minutes away, Cedar Inn Restaurant Lounge and Bottle Shop combines several businesses under one roof. There's a practical North Dakota charm to that arrangement... plus it gives you an overnight option when you're exploring Icelandic State Park. The menu covers burgers, quesadillas, salads, Macho Nachos (which I will be ordering), and excellent walleye, which earns plenty of local praise.

Then there's Cavalier Cinema. In a country where so many historic movie theaters have disappeared, this place feels increasingly special. The theater has welcomed moviegoers since 1949 and remains one of the town's most beloved gathering spots. You could stream a movie back at your Airbnb. You could also spend an evening in a classic hometown theater that's been part of community life for generations. One option is considerably more memorable.

History lovers should also carve out time for the Pembina County Historical Museum, which tells the story of the region through artifacts, machinery, and historic buildings. If you're visiting with family, Cavalier City Park offers walking trails, pickleball courts, disc golf, and a swimming pool during the warmer months.

If you're looking for a place to stay near this North Dakota State Park, there are pretty incredible nearby Airbnbs. Visitors can find cottages, apartments, and countryside rentals around Cavalier and Lake Renwick, giving you easy access to both town and park without adding extra drive time to your trip.

What To Know Before You Go

Late spring through early fall brings the best weather for exploring Icelandic State Park. Arriving earlier in the day usually means quieter trails and more opportunities to spot wildlife around Lake Renwick. Bring layers, even in summer. North Dakota weather occasionally likes to keep visitors guessing.

If you have extra time, the nearby Pembina Gorge State Recreation Area offers additional hiking opportunities and some of the most dramatic scenery in the state.

Among the best towns near state parks in North Dakota, Cavalier feels like a place that rewards curiosity. Spend a few hours at Icelandic State Park, and you'll understand why people make the trip. Spend a little time in Cavalier, and you'll understand why many visitors stay longer than planned... and some might call it one of the best hidden gem towns in the USA.

So head to North Dakota, walk the trails through the Gunlogson Arboretum, watch the sunlight dance across Lake Renwick, then make your way into Cavalier for a movie at the historic Cavalier Cinema and a plate of Super Nachos. North Dakota is chock-full of incredible state parks, and sometimes the best discovery waiting near one is a small town that turns a day trip into a weekend.
