This Remote Riverside Campground Is One of North Dakota’s Best Hidden Escapes
Escape to a peaceful riverside campground in North Dakota with scenic views, outdoor recreation, and easy access to charming Walhalla.
North Dakota is one of those places that just never seems to run out of amazing wonders to behold, trails to hike, parks to explore, or campgrounds to enjoy. Considering there are comparatively few visitors to our little corner of the world, it's not hard to get away from it all and really get away. For example, if you're looking for your new favorite campground, I've found a great contender: the Riverside Campground in Walhalla seems to have it all, and it makes for an awesome vacation escape. This remote campground in North Dakota seems to have it all—and I'm sure you'll love it.
Why This Remote Campground in North Dakota Feels So Remote
Located in the northeastern corner of North Dakota, the Pembina River Valley defies what many imagine the state to be like. Rather than flat plains, you'll find dramatic rolling hills, steep bluffs, and the largest contiguous forest in North Dakota. The campground is right on the water, far removed from the nearest highway. This is one of the reasons I count it among the best campgrounds in North Dakota. As one of the most incredible places to camp in North Dakota, I'm certain you won't be disappointed.
Amenities That Make Camping Here Easy
The Riverside Campground has plenty of grassy spots and trees for shade—you can even set up near the water at some sites. There's a mix of 38 modern sites with electric and water hookups, plus spacious, primitive tent camping sites deeper in the woods.
You'll also find family-friendly amenities like clean on-site showers, picnic shelters, and fire rings to keep your stay comfortable. Elsewhere in the park, two playground areas and a swimming pool offer even more fun. The campground strikes that perfect balance where you feel secluded in nature, yet you're still within easy walking distance of town. If you've been searching for a scenic riverside campground to add to your roster, this spot delivers.
Things To Do Around Walhalla and the Pembina River
The Pembina River is popular for boating, paddling, and fishing. You'll find canoe and kayak access to the river right in the campground, making it easy to spend a day on the water.
Downtown Walhalla is within walking distance. Wander down Central Avenue to grab a bite to eat or catch a movie at the historic Walla Theater. For even more North Dakota outdoor adventure, take a scenic drive out to the stunning Masonic Scenic Overlook or head out for some unforgettable Pembina Gorge adventures along the network of hiking trails.
It's a grassy area with lots of beautiful trees for shade, and you can even sidle right up to the water in some cases. Audubon Lake is popular for boating, canoeing, kayaking, and fishing. In the winter, it's amazing for ice fishing; my personal favorite time of year to show up here, though, is definitely in the spring. Temperatures aren't too crazy-hot, but they're not cold, either. The weather is typically sunny and agreeable, and who doesn't love a day beside the lake? I sure do.
So, whether you're car camping, RV camping, dispersed camping, or anything else, definitely consider a night or five at the Riverside Park Campground. This is one destination where you can escape the struggles of the modern world and relax, unwind, and enjoy nature.
What To Know Before Planning Your Trip
You'll want to keep a few things in mind while you're considering a stay at the Riverside Campground.
- Availability: The campground operates seasonally, typically from mid-May through the end of September.
- Reservations: The campground is popular with anglers and boaters, so you'll want to make advance reservations at Walhalla Riverside Campground—especially on summer weekends.
- Packing essentials: You'll want insect repellent, sturdy shoes for hiking, and layers, including a rain jacket, as well as all your favorite camping equipment.
- Cell service: Cell service can be spotty here, depending on your carrier, so if you plan to do any hiking, you'll want to download trail maps ahead of time and let folks know where you'll be and when you plan to return.
Definitely consider spending a night (or five) at this beautiful spot. This is one destination where you can escape the struggles of the modern world and relax, unwind, and enjoy nature. It's the perfect basecamp for your summer weekend getaways in North Dakota. For more information about the area, visit the City of Walhalla website and the Pembina Gorge State Park page.
