Sleepy Hollow Sounds Scary, but It’s One of the Best Hikes in North Dakota
Sleepy Hollow sounds like a scary hiking trail in North Dakota, but it’s not. Instead, it’s a rugged urban trail that you can hike day or night.
If the name "Sleepy Hollow" conjures images of a headless horseman riding through a dark, foggy forest on the outskirts of rural America, same. And a hiking trail with that moniker sounds like one better left to those braver than me—unless you’re in Bismarck. Then this seemingly scary hiking trail in North Dakota isn’t actually creepy at all. Instead, it’s more of a literary play on words than a spooky place to test your resolve in the woods. It’s an urban oasis, offering 4 miles of nature immersion, just minutes from downtown Bismarck.
Why Is It Called Sleepy Hollow Loop?
The strangely named hiking trail is located within Sleepy Hollow Park, an urban park dedicated to youth performing arts, including an outdoor theater that hosts seasonal performances. The park's name is an ode to Washington Irving, a 19th-century American author, and his literary masterpiece, "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." And the Sleepy Hollow Loop, located within the park, is a beloved, not feared, trail among locals seeking a quick escape into nature.
What the Hike Is Actually Like
Despite its urban location and scary-sounding name, the Sleepy Hollow Loop sometimes makes the list of the best hikes in North Dakota. The 4-mile trail is narrow and rugged, and it’s a multi-use trail used by hikers, trail runners, and single-track mountain bikers alike. I personally love it for the rugged, narrow dirt path that makes it feel wilder than many paved urban trails. The mix of difficulty is nice, too: a rolling trail that follows the dips and climbs of the natural forest and intermittent prairie. AllTrails calls it an easy hike, but to me it belongs in the moderate category. Considering it’s dirt and rock and can be muddy or overgrown in spots, it’s best to wear actual hiking boots and plan for more time than most easy hikes of this length would take. It’s a great place to spot wildlife, wildflowers, birds, and butterflies, but don’t forget the bug repellent!
What To Know Before You Go

Another unique feature I love about this hike is that you can actually consider hiking here at night. Sleepy Hollow Park often has outdoor theatrical performances around dusk in the summer months, so the park and trails are well-lit. That means you can head out during or shortly after a performance, knowing there are lots of people around and lighted pathways. This special feature makes it fun to hike this trail with an unusual hiking trail name after dark, perhaps to prove it’s not as spooky as it sounds. There is free parking in the park near the trailhead on Divide Avenue and North 26th Street.
Is Bismarck’s Sleepy Hollow Loop Worth Hiking?
Bismarck’s Sleepy Hollow Loop at Sleepy Hollow Park is bound to become a quick favorite if you’re looking for a quiet, rugged, scenic hiking trail that feels like a true escape into the forest. It’s best appreciated between April and September, but some people might enjoy it in the winter as well. It might be tougher than expected for those seeking an easy trail, since it’s not paved, has some rocky or overgrown sections, and hiking boots are recommended.
The Sleepy Hollow Loop is a North Dakota hiking trail that sounds scary, but it's quite the contrary! Instead, it’s a wonderful place to go during summer in North Dakota that offers a quick retreat into nature and even the opportunity for a night hike.
