Why Clemson, South Carolina is the Ultimate Fall College Town
The beauty of fall in Clemson sets the stage for football and family. Papa and I make every Saturday our own showdown.
When I was a kid, I lived in Georgia and was proud to be a sweet Georgia peach. My grandparents, who we visited at least once a month, lived about ninety minutes away in a whole other state. When you’re little, that feels epic. We made a big production out of crossing state lines, like we were pioneers or something. To this day, I still grin when I see that “Welcome to South Carolina” sign and those palmettos waving like they own the place. You can’t look at a palmetto without thinking of South Carolina, y'all, it’s practically a law.
As I got older, before I was even accepted to college at UGA, I started cheering for the Georgia Bulldogs... not because I cared that much about football statistics, but because I’ve always liked rooting for something. Papa was the same way. He’d pick a baseball team every season and follow them with the same intensity he reserved for stock market trends. So naturally, when he heard I was barking for the Dawgs, he had to go and pledge his allegiance to the Clemson Tigers. To him, rivalry was just good manners. Clemson was the closest campus to his house on Lake Hartwell, so he picked them with all the enthusiasm of a man discovering a new hobby.
We never made it inside Death Valley for a game, but we visited Clemson often enough that it felt like a second hometown. Back in the ’80s, Clemson wasn’t polished like it is now. The streets were quieter, but the orange was just as loud. We’d stroll through downtown, past shops with hand-painted signs, past the kind of diners where the ketchup bottles never matched and the coffee came in mugs that felt stolen from someone’s grandma. Students hustled to class with Walkmans clipped to their jeans, and Papa and I would grab milkshakes and pretend we had something important to do on campus. Spoiler: we didn’t.
Nowadays? Clemson is equal parts football powerhouse and outdoor sanctuary. You can practically feel the town vibrating on game days, but if you step away from the Tiger paws painted on sidewalks, you’ll find space to breathe. My favorite escape? The South Carolina Botanical Garden, and yes, it’s right in the city. Not outskirts, not “nearby.”
In Clemson, the South Carolina Botanical Garden spans nearly 300 acres, and in the fall, it feels like the garden's grand finale. It's everything you want out of an autumn adventure: the trails crunch under your sneakers, and the ponds don’t just reflect color, y'all, they throw back every shade of orange, crimson, and gold like they’ve been practicing for this moment all year.
And then there’s the Jockey Lot: a flea market that feels like its own little country, complete with its own rules, currency, and soundtrack (spoiler: it’s mostly someone yelling about boiled peanuts). It’s loud, endless, and, somehow, deeply comforting. I think I love it because it makes total chaos feel like an adventure. One aisle tempts you with tube socks stacked higher than your head, the next hawks knockoff perfume with names that almost sound legit (“Channel No. 6” if you’re feeling fancy), and before you know it, someone’s handing you a deep-fried turkey leg roughly the size of a third grader.
My holy grail, though? The gem mining station. Whoever came up with that idea deserves a medal in marketing brilliance. Here’s the pitch: give an overly excited kid (me) a bucket of dirt, smile at their parents while charging them actual cash money, and let the treasure hunt begin. I’d stand there at the wooden trough, sluicing mud like some Appalachian gold prospector, heart pounding because I was this close to striking it rich.
If you’re more into fresh air than flea market theatrics, head to Mountain View Park. The walking trails live up to the name: views that hit you mid-stride and make you stop just to stare. Tall trees, little surprises of wildflowers, and those occasional breaks in the canopy where the Blue Ridge Mountains peek through like they’re checking in on you. These aren’t Instagram trails; they’re the kind that stick to your memory because they smell like pine and earth and a season that doesn’t last long enough.
So here’s the move: pick a weekend, stay in Clemson, and let the day decide if you’re a football fan, a nature lover, or a gem-mining champion. Hit the Botanical Garden, walk the trails, grab a bag of boiled peanuts at Jockey Lot, and then let the roar of Death Valley remind you this town knows how to do tradition and surprise at the same time. By the time the sun drops behind the mountains and the sky turns that weird shade of orange Clemson fans claim they invented, you’ll get it. This isn’t just a college town. It’s a place where family, rivalry, and fall all meet in one perfect showdown.
