Leaves, Lyrics and Linebackers: Why Athens Is a Must-Visit This Fall
A tree that owns itself, tunes that own your soul. Athens in autumn? It’s roots, riffs, and rivalries in perfect harmony.
Fall in Georgia means corn mazes, pumpkin patches, and Instagram-perfect leaf piles. Those are great, sure, but for me, fall in Georgia has always meant football, funky music, and yes, a tree with a legal ego. Straight out of high school, I landed in Athens as a freshman at UGA. And if there’s one truth I’ve carried since the 90s, it’s this: fall in Georgia is Athens, and Athens in fall is magic.
Life in Athens, Georgia
Athens is a town that knows who it is. It’s got history in its brick sidewalks and creativity in its bones. Long before the craft beer boom and artisanal donuts, there was Bulldog Country, a term that isn’t just geographic; it’s a way of life.
Some of my favorite 90s Athens memories are rooted (literally) in trees. My Academic Team sponsor, Mr. Dinwiddie, took us to DaVinci’s every time we had something celebration-worthy. And let me tell you, DaVinci’s wasn’t just a restaurant; it was a dreamy work of art. Smack in the center of the dining room, a tree stretched upward and outward through the floor and ceiling like it had a reservation of its own. The dream was always to get the tree table, the holy grail of Athens dining. Spoiler alert: I never got it.
Unforgettable Tree Lore in Athens
DaVinci’s is gone now, which means the tree table is officially the white whale of my dining career. But there’s another tree in Athens that makes up for it, and this one isn’t just in the building… it is the building. The Tree That Owns Itself proudly stands at the corner of South Finley and Dearing Streets, and according to local legend, it actually has legal ownership of itself and the dirt under its roots. The original white oak started life centuries ago, fell in 1942, and was replaced by its heir, often called “The Son of the Tree That Owns Itself.” Today, it’s a beloved Athens landmark, complete with its own historical plaque and a fan club of gardeners. If you’ve never stood on that cobblestone street and read its story, you haven’t truly experienced Athens.
The University Lifestyle in Athens

Of course, Athens isn’t all about arboreal aristocracy. Fall Saturdays mean football at Sanford Stadium, and there’s nothing like the roar when victory swells across 92,000 fans. I’ll never forget the feeling of standing on that field as the national anthem played, backed by what felt like every high school marching band in Georgia. The energy is so electric it could power the Arch for a century.
Take In a Show at the Georgia Theater
When the last whistle blows, Athens keeps the music going. In the 90s, the Georgia Theatre was the place to see legends before they blew up: think Widespread Panic, R.E.M., or whoever was about to change the soundtrack of your life. Even now, the Theatre’s marquee feels like a promise: come inside, something unforgettable is about to happen.
Enjoy the Peace of Sandy Creek Nature Center
And when you need a break from the buzz? Head to Sandy Creek Nature Center, where the trails wind through hardwood forests like something out of a watercolor painting. The leaves put on a show of their own, and it’s the kind of quiet beauty that makes you linger just a little longer before heading back to town.
So, here’s your game plan: This fall, make Athens your destination. Catch a game between the hedges, see an up-and-comer at the Georgia Theatre, and take a detour to meet the most famous tree in America. You can’t get the tree table at DaVinci’s anymore, but you can still stand under the oak that owns itself. And trust me, it’s a better photo op than any pumpkin patch (although I still love a good corn maze in Georgia).
