As the oldest city in the state, Charleston is loaded with history and the monumental efforts that have been made to preserve it are a big part of its allure. Neighboring Mount Pleasant gets overlooked by most tourists but has certainly drawn attention recently from Money magazine, which named it the #1 place to live in the state! And if you were wondering about the best neighborhoods in Mount Pleasant, the Old Village would be on your shortlist if you were looking for history and charm similar to that of Charleston.
After Charleston was founded, known then as Charles Town, several English-style villages developed along the Charleston Harbor, east of the Cooper River.
All throughout this great neighborhood in Mount Pleasant, you'll find 20 historical markers that are part of a self-guided walking tour put together by the Moultrie Middle School Wellness Committee. Each marker has a Near Field Communication (NFC) enabled label, which allows you to access additional historical information. In 1803, James Hibben purchased the Mount Pleasant plantation property which was part of a district of prosperous plantations. He surveyed 35 village lots and founded the town of Mount Pleasant SC. The Hibben House, pictured here, was the original Mount Pleasant Plantation house and is still a part of what is known as the Old Village today.
The Hibben House is believed to date back to as early as 1755 and is one of the old, historic homes that survived Hurricane Hugo.
Shem Creek borders one side of the Old Village and is in and of itself a popular attraction with restaurants, a park, a boardwalk, and more.

Nestled in the heart of the Old Village, Pitt Street Bridge was originally a trolley bridge connecting Mount Pleasant and Sullivan's Island. Most of the original bridge was demolished, but a fishing pier was formed from what was left and is now enjoyed by the community and visitors.
The Whilden House is another of the incredible historic homes in the Old Village.
The Whilden House / 54th Massachusetts Regiment Marker by the home tells its story and about its role in history.
With both old and newer homes, the Old Village has become one of Mount Pleasant's most desirable neighborhoods to live in and was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 to preserve its architectural styles.
The Old Post House is a coastal tavern and inn offering seasonal fare, classic cocktails, and seven cozy rooms for guests to stay in.

Saint Andrews Church was established in 1835 and holds services at two other locations, including downtown Charleston and North Charleston. This building was designed by renowned architect E. B. White, who also designed many of Charleston's famous structures.

Leeah's Old Village Wine Shop is a lively spot offering wine tastings, tapas, and sometimes live entertainment.
