The Perfect Dupe for Bryce Canyon National Park: Cathedral Gorge State Park

With breathtaking panoramic views, slot canyons, caves, and dreamy night skies, this Nevada state park is just as impressive as Bryce Canyon.

What do Cathedral Gorge State Park and Bryce Canyon National Park have in common? Everything! I consider this 2,000-acre state park in Nevada a mini version of the mighty Bryce Canyon. For instance, Cathedral Gorge features dramatic rock formations and slot canyons formed millions of years ago. The area also has scenic overlooks, multi-use hiking trails, picnic areas, campgrounds, and more. Plus, both parks are havens for stargazing, and with limited light pollution, the skies glow at night in the best way. Not to mention, they’re a paradise for photographers.

The difference? The scale, the crowd size, the cost, and the state. So, if you ask me, there’s no need to cross the state line to Utah when you can visit Cathedral Gorge, the perfect dupe for Bryce Canyon.

About Cathedral Gorge State Park

alt

You can find Cathedral Gorge State Park in the remote town of Panaca, in northeastern Nevada near the Utah border. Since the nearest major city is Las Vegas, the park is a great destination for a quick road trip or a weekend getaway. Though small in comparison to the 35,000-acre Bryce Canyon, this hidden gem in Nevada is overflowing with dreamy landscapes. The breathtaking cathedral-like spires from which the park gets its name, along with the slot canyons, make this outdoor playground worthy of a visit.

The impressive landscapes were formed millions of years ago from volcanic activity. Large deposits of ash transformed into bentonite clay and eroded over time to form the spires and canyons that we admire today. Around every corner, there is another formation waiting to be discovered, and the canyons are easily accessible from the hiking trails. It’s no wonder that photographers and outdoor enthusiasts alike keep coming back to Cathedral Gorge State Park. A past visitor couldn’t get enough of this playground and stated, “Cathedral Gorge State Park was a mesmerizing experience! The unique slot canyons and towering spires of clay made it feel like stepping into another world.”

Why Skip Bryce Canyon for Cathedral Gorge State Park?

Of course, Bryce Canyon is worth a visit, but let’s be honest, the crowds and the vast terrain can be overwhelming. So, a smaller, more intimate park like Cathedral Gorge State Park will inspire you to explore more with ease. A trip here means wandering through alien-like landscapes, possibly by yourself. You can even create your own adventure by walking and crawling through the canyons and cave-like slots along the trails.

For the best views of the striking terrain, don’t skip exploring the Cathedral Caves, the Canyon Caves, or the Moon Caves Trail and the Juniper Draw Loop. The routes are easy and great for the little ones, so feel free to bring them along. While exploring the clay crevices, be sure to have your camera in hand to snap some Instagrammable pics for your collection.

Discover Miller's Point Overlook

A popular spot inside the park is Miller Point Overlook. Guests can enjoy sweeping panoramic views of the geological formations similar (but on a smaller scale) to the amphitheater at Bryce Canyon.

Please note: Millers Point, the main overlook at the park, experienced a recent closure for safety upgrades. But have no worries, it is scheduled to open soon. Visit the Nevada State Park website for more information.

Cathedral Gorge Has Awe-Inspiring Points of Interest

Other features of the park include a historic stone water tower built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. Plus, there are shaded picnic areas with views of the formations, camping facilities, and a visitor center with interpretive exhibits.

Go Stargazing at Cathedral Gorge

To take your visit to the next level, I suggest booking a camping spot and spending the night gazing at the twinkling stars. Since the park is recognized as a dark sky destination, you’ll have one of the best seats in Nevada to witness the wonders of the galaxies. On a clear evening, the Milky Way will be in full glory, so don’t leave your binoculars or telescope when you visit.

Folks, as you can see, Cathedral Gorge is the perfect dupe for Bryce Canyon. So, the next time you find yourself daydreaming about the mighty national park, plan a trip to this lesser-known gem instead. With its breathtaking panoramic views, miles of hiking trails, dramatic landscapes, and its dreamy night skies, this state park in Nevada belongs on your list. Did I mention that the entrance fee (per vehicle) at Cathedral Gorge costs less than a latte at your favorite coffee shop? In my eyes, you can’t ask for a better deal than that.
