Yes, it’s winter. Yes, it’s freezing cold in Montana (below, in fact)… but that doesn’t mean you should hibernate. The Treasure State is just as much of a gem now as it is in July—in fact, some places look even more beautiful as a winter wonderland. If you’re able to explore this season, try to check out a few places on this list.

1. Silver Crest Winter Recreation Area

If you enjoy cross country skiing, you'll love the Silver Crest trails located off Highway 89 southeast of Great Falls. The groomed paths are perfect for getting some exercise on a cold winter day, and the warming huts provide the perfect dose of comfort.

2. Bohart Ranch Cross Country Ski Center, Bozeman area

Speaking of skiing, novices and veterans alike love coming to the Bohart Ranch. The Ski Shop is open from December through March and offers ski and snowboard rentals to those who don't have their own equipment.

3. Glacier National Park

The dead of winter is the only time you'll see Going-To-The-Sun Road mostly free of cards, and the entire park mostly free of crowds. Take full advantage... the tourists will be back in a few months.

4. Whitefish Mountain Resort

If you’re a skier, you probably know plenty of slopes that are much more off the beaten path. But Whitefish is popular for a reason: It’s gorgeous. And whether or not you’re into snow sports, the resort is a beautiful and cozy place to spend a long winter night.

5. Seeley Lake

Seeley Lake is not just a summertime destination. In fact, their annual Winterfest celebration (held at the end of January) is an unforgettable experience.

6. Philipsburg

Philipsburg is beautiful during the summer, so just imagine how charming it is as a winter wonderland. Many of the towns shops and activities are open all year.

7. Lava Lake

Lava Lake is located near Gallatin Gateway, and during winter the 4.5 mile hiking trail (also called the Cascade Creek Trail) is positively magical.

8. Milwaukee Railroad Trail, Butte

When your cabin fever becomes too much to bear, head to the old Milwaukee Railroad and enjoy a nice 2 mile hike.

9. Bozeman

Bozeman was named one of America’s Prettiest Winter Towns by Travel & Leisure, and anyone who sees its snow capped landscaped would agree. Besides, it’s close to all kinds of winter recreational areas for hiking,cross country skiing or good old-fashioned sledding.

10. Red Lodge

This part of the state sees some pretty rough winter weather, so visiting might be tough. But if the fates allow and you're able to drive down the Beartooth Highway this time of year, it's absolutely gorgeous.

11. Fairmont

When you think of Fairmont, you probably think of the hot springs, which of course we recommend "exploring" this winter. But when you're not soaking, check out the miles of year-round hiking trails that surround the area.
