Glendive is located in eastern Montana, approximately 40 miles from the North Dakota-Montana state line. Its location is a bit unique as it sits next to the Yellowstone River, yet it’s near Montana’s badlands, resulting in pretty extraordinary scenery everywhere you look. It’s not a large town, with a population of approximately 4,800 people, but it’s one of the main destinations in the eastern part of the state.

Glendive was officially established in 1881 as a division headquarters for the Northern Pacific Railway, and also as a steamboat landing along the Yellowstone River. However, the history of this area dates back thousands of years, as this region was once home to dinosaurs of all shapes and sizes. Today, Glendive is a stop along Montana’s Dinosaur Trail and one of the best places in the state to view fossils and dinosaur bones.

But it’s not just the town’s landscape and its history that make this underrated town in Montana stand out. It is also the unique roadside attractions, its dinosaur obsession, and even Buzzard Day, an exciting summer festival at nearby Makoshika State Park that celebrates local turkey vultures.

Oh, and you can’t forget Glendive’s unusual nickname, "Caviar Capital on the Plains." Yes, Glendive is an unlikely hub for caviar, as the Yellowstone River is home to ancient paddlefish, and the unfertilized eggs of the paddlefish are harvested and processed to create caviar.

The Quirky Attractions That Define This Town

When you first arrive in Glendive, you’ll not only be met with the unique scenery of eastern Montana, but also with delightful local shops and restaurants. Due to the town's location along Montana’s Dinosaur Trail, you'll also come across a few unique gems. For example, Glendisaurus, a life-size Triceratops, is one of these unusual sights. Located just north of town, this massive 19-foot statue is one that fascinates individuals of all ages.

The Glendive Dinosaur and Fossil Museum is another must-visit destination. Inside this 20,000-square-foot museum, you’ll find nearly two dozen full-size fossils and various exhibits. But this isn't just another dinosaur museum; it presents all of its exhibits from a biblical perspective. This is the largest dinosaur and fossil museum in the context of biblical history.

Of course, you don’t want to overlook Makoshika State Park either. This is the largest state park in Montana, with more than 11,000 acres to explore. This park is best known for its many fossils, including Triceratops and Tyrannosaurus Rex fossils, hiking trails, and camping. It also hosts one of our favorite peculiar events in Montana—Buzzard Day. This annual festival, held each June, features Buzzard runs, animal displays, hikes, and more.
