You Can Explore This College City in Oregon Entirely on Foot—and It’s Stunning

Corvallis is easy to explore on foot, with scenic views, local shops, and must-see attractions all within walking distance.

If you have spent any time in Oregon, you are familiar with many of its towns and cities that are easy to get around and explore on foot. Places like Cannon Beach and Astoria invite visitors to park the car and wander the shops and local gems. However, there’s one larger Oregon city that truly stands out for its walkability—Corvallis. This walkable city in Oregon has much to offer, from its delightful shops and welcoming atmosphere to a vibrant downtown that’s easy to navigate. Oh, and it’s absolutely stunning.

Why This Oregon City Is So Easy to Explore on Foot

Corvallis is nestled in the stunning Willamette Valley and is best known as home to Oregon State University (OSU). But while it may seem like a bigger city when you look at the numbers, it moves at a pace similar to a small town. Corvallis is approximately 14 square miles and flat, making it easy to walk all around. In fact, you can easily walk around the downtown area and to OSU within minutes. But its compact size and easy grid system aren't the only reasons this town is so easy to navigate.

Corvallis is designed for pedestrians and cyclists. Many of the most popular areas throughout town, such as along the Willamette River and the OSU campus, feature wide, accessible sidewalks and audible pedestrian signals. There are even dedicated shortcuts (or paths) that weave through parks and neighborhoods, allowing individuals to reach the main areas of town without being on busy roads or near heavy traffic.

Corvallis is even considered a Platinum-level Bicycle Friendly Community. This means it has achieved one of the nation’s highest standards for cycling by creating an extensive network of dedicated bike lanes, providing numerous bike parking options throughout town, promoting a strong bike culture, hosting biking events, etc.

The Best Things to See Within Walking Distance

As you walk along Corvallis' downtown area, you’ll find many locally-owned boutique stores, art galleries, and theaters. However, you'll want to pay special attention to the 40+ murals that brighten up the streets. One of the best ways to explore this scenic city in Oregon is to tackle the Corvallis Murals Scavenger Hunt. Simply download the mural map or pick up a printed brochure, and follow it to the many murals throughout town. Then, take your completed sheet to the visitor center for a prize. I recommend you make this a multi-day adventure by stopping at the many shops and restaurants you'll pass along the way.

Make sure you also take time to walk along Madison Avenue in Corvallis. If you start at the north end of Madison Avenue and walk down to the Riverfront Commemorative Park, you’ll pass more than 25 sculptures and other pieces of art, which are all part of the town’s Alley Art Walk. Once you arrive at Riverfront Commemorative Park, spend an afternoon enjoying views of the Willamette River, park sculptures, interpretive signs, the skate park, a spray fountain, and the park's beautiful landscaping.

What Makes This City Truly Stunning

Corvallis is the type of place that caters to individuals in all walks of life—college students, families, and seniors. While beautiful all year long, summer is the best time to visit this college town, as it's much drier than other months of the year, and many college students have left for the extended break. However, I particularly love autumn in Corvallis when the fall foliage creates a sea of color near the river, the campus, and throughout the valley. Plus, there’s nothing quite like attending an OSU football game or one of the community harvest festivals and events. But spring also shines as the tree-lined streets and pathways start to come alive after a wet winter.

It’s easy to walk around and enjoy the sights of Corvallis. From its colorful murals to its many boutique shops and restaurants, there’s never a shortage of things to see and do in this Oregon town. It’s certainly a place that you’ll love to explore in a car, but get out and get up close to what it has to offer. You won’t regret it.
