Eugene Is a Walkable City in Oregon Known for Its Fantastic Bookstores
Book lovers, rejoice! With over a dozen bookstores located in downtown alone, this unassuming college town is a bibliophile's dream come true.
As a lifelong voracious reader and lover of vintage books, I firmly believe that nothing can ever replace the sheer visceral joy of browsing a bookstore or library, much less the delight of stumbling upon a new favorite author who speaks to your very soul. Fortunately, even in our increasingly digital world, there's still hope for bibliophiles like myself!
For those of us who prefer the scintillating, sensory delights of a physical book over the blinding glare of a Kindle screen, book towns are a real thing. These communities are, as the term implies, towns filled with numerous independent bookstores, book aficionados, and an abundance of book-related activities — and they're an absolute dream for lovers of the written word.
Quaint cafes, local print shops, second-hand bookstores, community book swaps ...it's enough to make a girl swoon.
Here in Oregon, Portland is often the first city that comes to mind when we think of hitting up a local bookstore. After all, the iconic Powell's has certainly made a name for itself in the PNW, and for many, is a bucket list stop! But if the thrill of flipping through glossy covers and perusing towering stacks of hardcovers with gold-foiled pages sounds like your idea of a good time, the university town of Eugene — just a few hours south — might just be the most underrated literary destination in the state.
As the third-most populated city in the Beaver State and home to the University of Oregon (go Ducks!), Eugene is not what most would consider a hidden gem. But of all the things this vibrant college town is known for (craft breweries, college athletics, and the arts, just to name a few), it's also home to something even better.
Head downtown or do a quick search for bookstores in Eugene, and you'll find literally DOZENS of shops lining the streets. So many that it's difficult to know where to start! You might even call it the city's very own Book Row.
Founded in 1974, Smith Family Bookstore on Willamette could be considered Eugene's literary cornerstone. This family-run shop has been around for decades and is often the local book hunter's go-to with a massive collection of used books and obscure titles. With towering bookshelves and precarious stacks of hidden gems filling the space, it's also a literal treasure trove of literary delights, and you can easily find yourself getting lost in new reading possibilities for hours. Literally. There are six rooms and two expansive floors of delicious (yes, delicious) stories to pore through, so if ever there was a bookstore with something for everyone, this is it.
For the Indie-minded book connoisseur (who also happens to appreciate live music), Tsunami Books — also on Willamette — is a serious literary haven, with funky art displays, poetry slams, and a cool urban vibe that makes you want to come back time and time again. You'll even find some retro vinyl here! Be sure to keep an eye on the author's reading schedule and pre-order books to add to your signed edition collection.
Need another place to roam around on a relaxing weekend? You can also head to J. Michaels Books for beautifully curated collections of vintage books and rare finds, plus all the classic titles and stunning cover designs you could possibly hope for.
And it just keeps getting better! Fans of fantastical worlds and spicy new releases will absolutely love Daffodil Romantasy. This chic shop is small but gorgeous — and you can easily walk out with a few must-have gifts in tow. The darling coffee shop inside features bookish-themed mocktails and plenty of caffeine options in case you'd like to finish that steamy novella all in one sitting. The vibes are cozy, so you certainly can! While you're here, sign up to stay in the loop for special events as well. Think reading pajama parties, painting classes, book clubs, wine nights, and so much more!
Of all the small businesses in America, the humble bookstore is one of the most revered. With over a dozen bookstores and gift shops in just a 10-block radius (and even a few new concepts and additions on the horizon), Eugene, Oregon, is one charming PNW book town that shouldn't be missed!
