The Small-Town State Park in Montana Locals Want to Keep to Themselves

Montana is an outdoor lover’s paradise as it’s home to dozens of state parks and some of the most beautiful national parks in the U.S. But nestled in Anaconda is a small-town state park in Montana that seems to fly under the radar—and locals want to keep it that way. Lost Creek State Park is the definition of a hidden gem with stunning views, a short hike, and a gorgeous waterfall. It’s the type of place where you can find quiet in the great outdoors.

Why Lost Creek State Park Stands Out in Montana

Anaconda, Montana, is located near the Continental Divide. It’s best known for the Anaconda Smelter Stack, the world’s tallest freestanding brick structure that is an impressive 585 feet tall. However, this town is also the gateway to Lost Creek State Park, a quiet state park in Montana that is a local favorite and attracts visitors with its natural features, peaceful atmosphere, and delightful outdoor activities.

What You’ll Experience at Lost Creek State Park

Lost Creek State Park may not be the largest or the busiest state park in Montana, but it may be one of the most beautiful. This park is best known for its breathtaking natural features, and as you look around, you’ll be mesmerized by the limestone cliff walls and the granite formations that stand more than 1,200 feet above the ground. During a visit, watch for wildlife that roam around the park as well. Here, it isn't uncommon to spot creatures like bighorn sheep on the cliff walls and bald eagles soaring overhead.

One of the main natural wonders found within this state park is the 50-foot waterfall known as Lost Creek Falls. There is a short trail to reach these falls, but it’s family-friendly and takes you to the base of the falls, which are surrounded by lush greenery in the summer months. Because this is an underrated state park in Montana, don’t be surprised if you find yourself alone near the falls or with only a few others. This is a great place to be still, breathe in some fresh air, and enjoy the sounds of the great outdoors—it is nature therapy at its best.  

If you want an even longer hike, consider tackling the Lost Creek to Foster Creek Trail, which is more than 12 miles, steep, and challenging. However, if you don’t want to tackle this full trail on your own two feet, it’s a great option for mountain bikes.  

What to Know Before You Go

Lost Creek State Park is closed to vehicles during the winter months. However, roads are typically open between mid-May and late November. While this is a beautiful day trip destination near the small town of Anaconda, there is a small campground for tents and RV/trailers up to 23 feet long if you wish to stay overnight (which we strongly recommend!). Campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Non-residents and Montana residents who did not purchase the state parks pass fee with their vehicle registration must pay a day-use fee to enter this park.
