With 31 scenic byways in Idaho, there are opportunities for gorgeous drives all around the state. One of these drives, which is beautiful around every single turn, is the St. Joe River Scenic Byway in northern Idaho. As you explore this route, you’ll enjoy river and forest views, may spot some wildlife, and can even spend some time in St. Maries, one of the most charming small towns in the panhandle. This is one of my favorite scenic drives in Idaho and I love recommending the route. As soon as you begin this drive, you’ll understand why.

This is a two-lane, paved highway with several areas where you can pull over and enjoy the views.
Spring, summer, and fall are beautiful along this drive but I especially love the fall when the foliage is at its peak.
Keep in mind that Avery to the Idaho border is typically closed during the winter and becomes a snowmobile route.
This is a beautiful drive to spot some wildlife …
