One of Idaho’s Quirkiest Towns Is Still Flying Under the Radar

Learn all about one of the quirkiest towns in Idaho, filled with outdoor recreation and small-town charm. A hidden gem worth exploring.

If you are searching for a quirky town in Idaho full of charm, beauty, and a little weirdness, we have you covered. There are small towns like Wallace that claim to be the center of the universe. There are also towns with the most unusual names, like Santa, Bone, and Dingle. But one of my favorite small towns in Idaho is also one that embraces the wacky. And, even better, it’s still flying under the radar. Stanley, Idaho, is full of outdoor adventures, breathtaking natural beauty, and even an annual festival where it’s all about keeping things weird.

Where Is Stanley and Why Is It So Unique

I truly believe that Idaho is an underrated treasure—a state overlooked and passed by. However, a single visit to Stanley and its surrounding area, and Idaho will forever hold a place in your heart. This small town in central Idaho, with approximately 100 full-time residents, is nestled in the Sawtooth Valley and tucked up against the Sawtooth Mountains. It’s remote, out of the way, and the type of place that you must plan to visit.

When you've arrived, you won’t find much in the town itself, especially in the winter months. Rather, this town is a paradise for outdoor lovers as you are near hundreds of hiking trails, alpine lakes, the Salmon River, hot springs, and even world-class stargazing. And while these outdoor activities certainly make it worth visiting, its annual winter festival is what makes Stanley a little quirky and eccentric.

Stanley is one of the coldest places in the continental U.S. To celebrate that claim to fame, this teeny town hosts the Stanley Winterfest each President’s Day Weekend, with its slogan “Let’s Get Weird.” And this festival is truly all about keeping things weird. It is a family-friendly event with the most peculiar, unconventional, and delightful activities for all ages, ranging from an indoor beach party to outhouse races, snow rafting, human ice tugs, and so much more. This certainly isn’t your regular festival—it’s one that will keep you smiling and laughing all weekend long.

What It’s Like to Visit

In the winter months, aside from its annual festival, Stanley is quiet. The cold temperatures, snowfall, and location keep many visitors away, and even many local shops and restaurants are closed. However, this small community comes alive in the summer. Many people venture to this area for some time at one of the most scenic alpine lakes in Idaho—Redfish Lake. In fact, this is my personal favorite lake in Idaho as the Sawtooth Mountains provide the most gorgeous backdrop against the crystal-clear water. Kayaking, fishing, swimming, and even just playing on the sandy shores are popular activities here, along with a visit to the Redfish Lake Lodge, camping, and hiking.

The Sawtooth Mountains are beautiful in the summer and fall months, and with the dozens of trails in the area, there are options for all types of hikers, from beginners to experts. If you want to explore a trail that is easy and offers stunning Sawtooth Mountain views, consider the Fishhook Creek Trail. Just over 4.5 miles, this hike is fairly flat and takes you through thick forests, gorgeous meadows, and along a babbling creek. The Sawtooth Range stands boldly in front of you, and don't be surprised if you find yourself gawking as you explore.

If relaxation is what you are after, head to Sunbeam Hot Springs. This natural hot spring is approximately 20 miles outside of Stanley, and located in the river right along Highway 75—no hiking is required. Although if you want a more heart-racing adventure, Stanley also sits right at the headwaters of the Salmon River, a popular spot for whitewater rafting.

End your day by looking up at the night sky. Stanley is one of the best stargazing destinations in Idaho. It is part of the Central Idaho Dark Sky Reserve and offers incredible views of the Milky Way due to its remote location, little light pollution, and high elevation. The night sky here is incredible.

Why It’s Still Flying Under the Radar

There is so much to love about the Stanley community, but due to its small size and remote location, this unique small town in Idaho tends to be overlooked, especially if you are heading to places like Sun Valley, Ketchum, or even Boise. It certainly doesn’t have the amenities like many other destinations in the state, but it does have charm, outdoor recreation, and a festival that embraces the weird and quirky side of Idahoans.

Stanley is a hidden gem in Idaho. It’s a tiny town where you might blink and miss it, yet you can't forget it. This is a place known for its beauty, charm, and community... and quirkiness. After all, there’s nothing better than keeping it weird.
