Why Carolina Beach Gets So Crowded

We get it—Carolina Beach is popular for many reasons. The Carolina Beach Boardwalk is something everyone should experience at least once. The seaside attraction is filled with shops, restaurants, and nightlife, making it perfect for a summer vacation. Access to amenities, activities, and accommodations are all factors for why Carolina Beach has become so popular. Not to mention you have Carolina Beach State Park right at your doorstep.

The Beach You Should Visit Instead

If you’re planning to spend a week at the beach, perhaps Carolina Beach is the best call. But if you’re just looking for a day trip to one of the less crowded beaches in North Carolina, Fort Fisher State Recreation Area is the place to be. 

Fort Fisher State Recreation Area is located only five miles south of Carolina Beach, yet it feels worlds away. It’s the ideal place for a day trip to the beach where you can experience a peaceful, quiet summer day away from the crowds. 

What Makes This Beach Better

The 287-acre recreation area offers a little bit of everything: beach access, an oceanfront pavilion, hiking trails, and wildlife viewing. If you’re the type that can’t just sit at the beach all day, then Fort Fisher State Recreation Area is perfect for you. When you need a change of scenery, you can take a stroll to the marshy side of the park and enjoy the views of the salt marsh, or check out the historic Hermit’s bunker, a World War II relic. 

Fort Fisher State Recreation Area is also the only park in the system that allows four-wheel-drive beach access. Surf fishing has never been easier! Access passes are $30 during the week and $40 on weekends and can be purchased in advance.

What to Expect When You Visit Fort Fisher State Recreation Area

There is no lifeguard on duty, so swimming is at your own risk. There are restrooms and a rinse-off station near the beach, as well as a decent-sized parking lot. As you set up shop for the day, watch for signs about turtles. The beach is a critical nesting ground for Loggerhead and Green sea turtles, and park rangers regularly patrol it to mark turtle nests. Nesting season is typically from May through August, so it’s likely you’ll see some marked-off areas during your visit.
