Locals Love This Hidden Gem Swimming Hole in North Carolina (That Doesn’t Feel Like the U.S.)

Uncover a hidden swimming hole in North Carolina with cool water, tropical vibes, and a local reputation as one of the state's best summer escapes.

Everyone wants to stumble across a hidden swimming hole free from the crowds of the popular spots, but are you willing to do what it takes? Many of North Carolina’s swimming spots, like Deep Creek, Sliding Rock, and Quarry Falls, are truly amazing spots to spend a summer day. For those who want to escape the crowds and are willing to do a little hiking, there's one hidden swimming hole in North Carolina where you could end up being the only one around!

Why Locals Love This Hidden Swimming Hole

Schoolhouse Falls is one of those swimming holes in North Carolina that locals love, but travelers tend to miss. Located in Panthertown Valley, this 20-foot waterfall swimming hole can only be reached after hiking for about a mile and a half. Are there other, more easily accessible swimming holes in North Carolina? Absolutely. But your efforts to reach Schoolhouse Falls will be rewarded in more ways than one.

Locals love this hidden swimming hole because it's secluded, it's scenic, and that water feels amazing on a hot summer day. The sandy beach is a bonus that makes the 1.5-mile hike a no-brainer.

What to Expect During Your Visit

Even though the hike from the trailhead to the waterfall is just shy of two miles, I’d encourage you to tackle the six-mile loop that Schoolhouse Falls is a part of. It’s not a particularly difficult hike, compared to many North Carolina hikes, and you’ll have some seriously scenic views along the way. Plus, we all know that the refreshing water from the swimming hole will feel even better after a long hike.

Of course, the full loop isn’t mandatory, and you’re free to just head straight to this hidden swimming hole in North Carolina. Surrounded by lush greenery, the 20-foot waterfall cascades down into a fabulous swimming area with plenty of space to splash around.

One of my favorite parts of this North Carolina swimming spot is that there’s a little beach area! It’s not that often you get a waterfall, a swimming area, a forest, and a beach all rolled into one—but Schoolhouse Falls checks off all the boxes, plus some! Feel free to pull up a patch of sand and enjoy the views. It’s also possible to walk behind the waterfall, though I’d make sure you’re wearing shoes with a good grip, as those rocks can be slippery.

Tips Before You Visit Schoolhouse Falls

Since this swimming hole in North Carolina requires some effort to reach, you could easily find yourself the only person here. We love that for you! Before you tackle the hike, be sure to have the AllTrails map handy, as many visitors have noted that the trail can be hard to follow at times. There are no facilities, so be sure you practice Leave No Trace principles and bring all of your trash with you.

For those seeking an aquatic adventure in nature, you really can’t beat this hidden swimming hole in North Carolina.
