One of North Carolina’s Quirkiest Towns Is Still Flying Under the Radar
A cat-themed museum, a lofty staircase, and breathtaking hiking trails are just a few places that define this mountain town.
When I think about unexpected, quirky places in North Carolina, my mind immediately goes to Asheville. From its colorful sightseeing comedy bus tours to its sour beer scene and the bohemian art almost everywhere you look, the city is full of surprises. But now that I've discovered the town of Sylva, it's hard to imagine a more deserving contender for "quirky town in North Carolina." With delightfully strange landmarks, a vibrant downtown, and plenty to see and do, this Western North Carolina locale deserves a spot on your itinerary.
Where Is Sylva and Why Is It So Unique?
Sylva is tucked away at the base of the Smoky Mountains, about an hour west of Asheville in Jackson County, North Carolina. Most folks traveling to this part of the state are usually after the bigger attractions, like Great Smoky Mountains National Park or the more established mountain towns. But a trip to Sylva shouldn't be discounted. You could say this town has a flair for the dramatic, with its historic courthouse perched atop a hill overlooking Main Street. If you want to go inside the courthouse—which now serves as Sylva's public library—you'll need to walk up more than 100 steps!
The Quirky Attractions That Define This Town
Now let's get down to the details. There are quite a few attractions and landmarks that define this quirky town in North Carolina, and truly, you'll want to see them all! First stop: the American Museum of the House Cat. This eccentric museum houses a collection of over 5,000 cat-themed items. And naturally, a few friendly feline residents roam the place. In short, it's a cat enthusiast's dream. One recent traveler recommended arriving right when it opens (at 10 a.m.) so you can spend hours admiring the collection.
When you're ready to get out and explore the town's lovely natural landscape, you'll have plenty of options. But perhaps the most unique is the Certified Forest Therapy Trail at Pinnacle Park. Inspired by the Japanese practice of Shinrin-Yoku, or forest bathing, the trail promises a mindful, sensory-filled experience of the woods. There's even a guided meditation you can listen to as you walk. (But I think the better soundtrack would be the birdsong or the sound of the breeze rustling the treetops!)
Ready to unwind? Grab a drink at Balsam Falls Brewing, famous for its welcoming vibe and creative menu. Some beers on tap might include Mango Habanero Salt Rock Wit, the Petrified Dragonfly, or Fergus the Rat (a chocolate milk stout). And speaking of festive drinks, did you know that all of downtown Sylva is considered a social district? This means you can carry drinks from licensed businesses in a designated cup while you shop and stroll. So party on—responsibly, of course!
Why It’s Still Flying Under the Radar
Compared to other destinations in Western North Carolina, Sylva is still relatively undiscovered outside the local community. And though it's a welcoming, family-friendly place to visit, it's not necessarily catered to tourists. There isn't a ton of commercialization, and the attractions feel authentic to their place rather than put there for photo ops and bucket lists.
The next time you're looking to get to know a place as a local would, you should give Sylva a try. One of the most unusual towns in North Carolina, it will almost certainly win you over. Looking for more places to uncover? Check out this list of 12 incredibly charming small towns in North Carolina.
