The Most Beautiful Lake in North Carolina That Most People Have Never Heard Of

Surrounded by stunning mountains and protected forest, this hidden-away lake is a warm-weather must.

North Carolina is home to hundreds of lakes, each offering a much-needed respite from the summer heat or providing a picture-perfect backdrop for a fall outing. Some lakes—like Lake Norman, Lake Lure, or Lake James—are known throughout the region for their beauty and recreational opportunities, but fortunately, there are plenty that are relatively unknown. One such hidden lake in North Carolina is Lake Santeetlah, and, as you'll soon discover, it's worth every mile it takes you to get there.

Why Most People Have Never Heard of This Lake

Tucked away in Graham County, about two hours from Asheville, Lake Santeetlah is located in one of the least-populated regions of the state. Plus, getting there requires driving along winding mountain roads, deep into the mountains of Western North Carolina. Understandably, it tends to get overshadowed by some of the region's more popular, easier-to-get-to lakes. But if it's a secluded, peaceful experience you're looking for, you'll be glad you opted for the trip to Lake Santeetlah. It's technically a reservoir, created in 1928 by damming the Cheoah River for hydroelectric power. Today, it covers 2,881 acres and offers 76 miles of mostly undeveloped shoreline to explore.

What Makes This Lake So Beautiful

Lake Santeetlah looks like it belongs on a postcard. With crystal-clear water and mountains every which way, the lake looks like a giant mirror reflecting its beautiful surroundings. But what really makes this place so special is the fact that it has remained largely undeveloped. Most of the lakeshore is protected by the Nantahala National Forest, so rather than seeing vacation homes and storefronts, you'll enjoy views of the mountains and forests, with a few boat launches and recreational areas sprinkled in.

What You Can Do at This Lake

This hidden lake in North Carolina may be peaceful, but it's still big on adventure. One of the most popular things to do here is camp on the lakefront. There are primitive spots available on a first-come, first-served basis, accessible via Joyce Kilmer Road and Long Hungry Road. (Just be sure to register with the US Forest Service-Cheoah Ranger District.) But even if you're just there for a day, you could easily spend hours on the water. You and your crew can rent a kayak, pontoon, or ski boat at Santeetlah Marina and enjoy the stunning views right from the water.

Or, how about taking a dip? One of the easiest places to get into the water is Cheoah Point Beach. There's a sandy beach, picnic tables, a grassy lawn, and a designated swimming area all for your convenience. Because there's no designated lifeguard, families should stick to the designated swimming area and always exercise caution.

So, whether you're searching for secret swimming spots, an off-the-beaten-path road trip destination, or perhaps just a beautiful, remote lake in North Carolina, you'll be so glad you bookmarked Lake Santeetlah.
