Taking a dip in a cool, refreshing North Carolina swimming hole is a beloved pastime. No matter your age, the allure of dipping into a brisk pool is one that never gets old. With the weather warming up and that vacation mindset kicking in, now's a perfect time to plan a fun day trip to a swimming hole. So whether you're looking for the perfect setting for a romantic outing or a getaway with the whole family, these 14 swimming holes in North Carolina will not disappoint.
So pack up the car with some towels and let's get to exploring!
1. White Lake
This natural crater turned lake reaches depths of 15 feet, but miraculously, you can always see the bottom of it. For a slice of crystal clear water and white sand you'd think could only be found in the Bahamas, White Lake is a great destination. Cypress trees lend a beachy vibe and the water is just beautiful. It's no surprise that during the 1920s, White Lake used to be a luxury getaway. Today, the landmark is more laid-back but some of the houses still remain from its heyday. Given its natural beauty, White Lake is one of the most iconic swimming holes in North Carolina.
2. Sliding Rock
This extremely popular, literal, sliding rock is a well-loved swimming hole. Sliding down the rock into that crisp mountain water is just exhilarating. It's a great place to take the kids, too.
3. Looking Glass Falls
Just another two miles down U.S. 276 from Sliding Rock, you'll find another beloved North Carolina destination: Looking Glass Falls. This impressive waterfall makes for breathtaking scenery. The pool is perfect for dipping your toes in after a long mountain hike. While not the best swimming hole, young children will be able to splash and play next to an immaculate waterfall. If you are just looking to cool off then standing in front of the mist coming off of the falls can be very refreshing. What a fun experience! 4. Hooker Falls
If you're looking for a swimming hole with plenty of space for splashing about, Hooker Falls is the perfect choice. Grab a tube and float along while enjoying the calm sound of a waterfall. Or live a little and try out the rope swing. Located in DuPont State Forest, Hooker Falls is a popular destination for a cool dip on a hot day.
5. Deep Creek
Located in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park near Bryson City, Deep Creek is a popular destination for tubing. In fact, you can rent a tube on-site for a small fee. Take a pit stop at Tom Branch Falls to take in the beauty of your surroundings.
6. Lake Lure
A sandy beach, blue water, and mountain views are waiting for you at Lake Lure. Located near Chimney Rock, this beautiful destination is a place where you can hike in the morning and cool off in the afternoon. Sounds like the perfect summer-day itinerary!
7. Yadkin River
Yadkin River in the Piedmont region of North Carolina is an excellent place to cool off. Looking for even more to enjoy when you visit? Ask a local and they'll tell you where you can find a rope swing and even some small waterfalls.
8. Shacktown Falls
Shacktown Falls is definitely a hidden gem destination among swimming holes in North Carolina. The waterfall is also known by locals as North Deep Creek Falls and Styers Mill Falls. The cascade is relatively small and gentle enough to sit under. Large rocks make for the perfect place to relax and catch some rays.
9. Skinny Dip Falls
The name of Skinny Dip Falls, a breathtaking waterfall off the Blue Ridge Parkway, certainly raises an eyebrow. This waterfall has high rock outcroppings that are excellent for jumping off of. With several small pools, Skinny Dip is an ideal swimming hole in every way. Check out this video from Adventuring in the Moment when they hiked into this spot:
10. Cashiers Sliding Rock
Cashiers Sliding Rock is similar to the original Sliding Rock mentioned earlier yet with remarkably fewer crowds. If you love the idea of a natural slip-n-slide, this particular swimming hole will entertain for hours.
11. Elk River Falls
Just a stone's throw from the Tennessee border, this gorgeous and safe swimming hole rests beneath Elk River Falls. A sandy beach leading into the water makes a great place to prop a chair or towel and spend the day relaxing.
12. Lake Glenville
Rent a canoe and go explore one of the many hidden waterfalls on Lake Glenville. Between mountain views and crisp water, Lake Glenville is perfect for a day of water sports, boating, and swimming.
13. Yellow Creek Falls
Last, but certainly not least, our list concludes with a swimming hole at the base of Yellow Creek Falls, accessible via a 0.6-mile hike. This swimming pool spends a lot of time in the shade, so its waters are particularly brisk! However, the effect of the sun shining on the water is simply mesmerizing.
