Little Devils Tower Spur Trail Sounds Intense, but It’s One of the Best Hikes in South Dakota

Any trail with the word “devil” in it invokes a twinge of fear. Yet, Little Devils Tower Spur Trail is not quite the scary hiking trail in South Dakota it may seem. While challenging, this 3.8-mile out-and-back trail offers panoramic views of the Black Hills and Cathedral Spires.

The scramble requires some technical skills with regard to hand and foot placement. Typically, this route is better in the summertime than the colder months. This is because the snow and ice can make the scrambling section particularly hazardous. 

After completing the 784-foot elevation gain, you’re treated to divine views of the surrounding Black Hills and geological formations known as the Cathedral Spires. During your journey, keep your eyes open for mountain goats who call these rocky cliffs home. 

What To Know Before You Go

Little Devils Tower Spur Trail is located within the iconic Custer State Park. As a result, be prepared to pay a $25 7-day entrance fee to the park. Further, due to weather conditions, the best time to visit this hiking destination is between April and October. Be aware that the weather can change quickly in the Black Hills, so pack layers. Additionally, you’ll need hiking shoes with good traction. Rocks can be slippery, so you need to be confident in your ability to hold your ground and not slide. 

As the trailhead is located just steps away from the east side of Sylvan Lake, there is plenty of free lot parking. There are restrooms and picnic tables near the trailhead as well. Leashed dogs are permitted on the route, but the scramble may be challenging for pups who aren’t used to hiking. 

Is Little Devils Tower Spur Trail Worth Hiking?

The Little Devils Tower Spur Trail is absolutely worth hiking. Typically, the trail is best enjoyed by regular hikers who are in good physical condition. That said, many hikers have reported tackling the trail with older children and having a good experience. If you’re someone who isn’t comfortable with heights, the scrambling section could prove to be uncomfortable.
