10 Best Family Beach Vacations in the U.S.
From sleepy beach towns to rugged retreats, these beaches are the perfect backdrop for your family trip.

Nothing says quintessential family vacation like a trip to the beach. Rolling waves, stretches of sandy shoreline, and attractions like snack stands, bike rentals, and souvenir shops create the perfect backdrop for quality time with your crew.
The question is: What type of beach would you choose? I've always had an affinity for rustic beaches, with lots of sand and little pavement, but touristy spots with boardwalks, Ferris Wheels in the distance, and ice cream shops on every block can be equally charming. It all boils down to preference! Below, we've highlighted some of the best family beach vacations in the U.S., spanning from coast to coast and offering something for all ages.
1. Anna Maria Island, Florida

Located on Florida's Gulf Coast, Anna Maria Island is a seven-mile-long barrier island that promises a classic beach adventure. Think white sandy beaches, turquoise waters, perfect sunsets, and dolphins. The island is near three beautiful cities: Holmes Beach, Bradenton, and Anna Maria, with plenty of places to eat and shop. The Anna Maria Beach Resort is the perfect home base for your family, and folks love the waterfront views and zero-entry pool, ideal for even the tiniest swimmers. For a sweet treat, head to the Donut Experiment on Pine, where you can create your very own donut.
2. Virginia Beach, Virginia

Virginia Beach is a bustling city with a mile-long boardwalk and countless restaurants and shops to peruse. But there's a much quieter side to the city, too, especially if you're traveling with younger kids. Rather than hanging out near the oceanfront, I'd recommend checking out First Landing State Park, which has a beach on the bay with warm, gentle waters and nearby boardwalk trails to explore. For a nearby place to stay, the Delta on Shore Drive is a quieter, low-key option with access to the park.
3. Isle of Palms, South Carolina

For generations, the Isle of Palms has attracted families from all over for its pristine beaches, which lend themselves perfectly to swimming, strolling, sunbathing, or kayaking. After spending time along the water, explore the Front Beach commercial district for great shopping and dining options. The City of Isle of Palms is committed to keeping its beaches beautiful, so beachgoers should note that single-use plastics and Styrofoam are banned.
Wondering where to stay? The Wild Dunes Resort offers an impressive collection of inns, vacation rentals, and residences. For breakfast, don't miss the chance to dine at the Long Island Cafe, a bright, cozy spot famous for its crab cake eggs Benedict and French toast. Looking for dolphins? Head to the Shem Creek Boardwalk, about 30 minutes away, and prepare to be enchanted.
4. Saugatuck, Michigan

Anyone who's visited Lake Michigan's beaches can attest that they rival either coast. Affectionately known as the Art Coast, Saugatuck has been named one of the best towns in the U.S. It's mostly known for art galleries, wineries, and breweries, but it also boasts amazing family-friendly spots. Hike the Saugatuck Dunes North Trail, an easy, 1.9-mile trail at Saugatuck Dunes State Park that takes you along the shores of Lake Michigan. Mt. Baldy (the tallest dune) is another must-visit, along with Phil's, for a top-notch burger and a winning kids' menu. If you're traveling with a small group, this charming downtown condo is minutes from the town's best attractions.
5. Cannon Beach, Oregon

Cannon Beach isn't your typical beachfront vacation spot, but that's all part of the charm. This small coastal city is tucked away on a miles-long beachfront dotted with rocks, most famously, Haystack Rock. It's been named among the world's most beautiful places, and it's not hard to see why. Cannon Beach isn't a swimming beach, but it certainly offers some of the most epic beachfront walks you'll experience. Better yet, grab a colorful kite from one of the local shops and watch it dance overhead in the wind. For the kids, Bruce's Candy Kitchen is a must. Hallmark Resort is a wonderful place to stay; it's perfect for families and even boasts a spa for the adults.
6. Seaside, Florida

Seaside, Florida is a special place. It's a community-inspired town, with ample walkways, wide-open beaches, and delightful places to gather. If your notion of an idyllic beach getaway involves lots of tasty seafood and high-quality ice cream, Seaside certainly checks those boxes. Nigel's Bananas and the Shrimp Shack will entertain all ages, and when you're ready for a scenic nature stroll, the Watercolor and Seaside Trails Loop and the Timpoochee Trail are a must. For accommodations, check out the Watercolor Inn Resort, a family-friendly beachfront boutique hotel in nearby Santa Rosa Beach, Florida.
7. Nags Head, North Carolina

Many consider Nags Head to be the heart of North Carolina's Outer Banks. It's also the most recognizable, boasting landmarks like the famous dunes of Jockey’s Ridge State Park. If you're traveling with kids to the Outer Banks, it's a good idea to explore the soundside beaches for gentler waves. For a fun meal out, head to Basnight's Lone Cedar Cafe. Not only is the food amazing, but the kids will love spotting the osprey nest and walkable garden just outside the restaurant. Need a place to stay? This luxe oceanfront beach home has six bedrooms for the whole family to spread out.
8. Sister Bay Beach, Wisconsin

Sister Bay's Public Beach is a truly underrated Midwest vacation spot. While it might not have the most epic beachfront, it does deliver in family-friendly amenities like playgrounds, picnic tables, ice cream shops, confectioneries, and more. Speaking of delicious food, stopping by Door County Ice Cream Factory (when it's open for the season) and Wild Tomato to grab a pizza for dinner is a must. Spend the night at the Landmark Resort in Door County, perfect for the whole family, with an outdoor pool, playground, and even a waterpark. When you're not at the resort or indulging in ice cream, strolling past the shiny boats at the marina is also a fun activity for kids and adults alike.
9. Cape May, New Jersey

Cape May promises that classic family beach vacation, complete with clean beaches, mini golf, arcades, and more. Families have been traveling here for generations, and the town is infused with a family-friendly charm that's easy to love. For non-beachy activities, you can check out the Cape May County Zoo, which is open year-round and is admission-free. The Grand Hotel of Cape May offers a classic beachfront hotel experience, boasting views of the Atlantic Ocean and an outdoor pool. Whether you're looking for a slow-paced or adventurous vacation, this Jersey town has the best of both.
10. Coronado Beach, California

When you picture Southern California, you might think of the hustle and bustle of LA, but Coronado Beach is far removed from that. The resort beach town, just miles away from the laid-back community of San Diego, offers plenty of family-friendly accommodations. Take surfing lessons with the kiddos through the Coronado Surfing Academy, rent bikes from Hollands Bikes & Beyond to ride into town, and then stop for fresh sushi or burgers at The Henry. Tuck in for the night at Hotel del Coronado, a well-known, cozy resort in town.
