The $100 Virginia Beach Day Trip: A Perfect Itinerary for Spending an Affordable, Fun-Filled Day at the Beach
Experience the best of Virginia Beach without breaking the bank.
I've lived in Virginia for most of my life, but it wasn't until recently that I understood the charms of Virginia Beach. I love its approachable nature and how there's something for all ages, all melded into one vibrant beachfront experience. But Virginia Beach is more than its iconic mile-long boardwalk; exploring the city, you'll find tons to do at a surprisingly affordable rate. Below, I've outlined a day trip itinerary that packs in sun, sand, surf, and some unexpected delights—all for less than $100.
Breakfast (Total: $18)
You've got a full day ahead, so you'll want to start your day with a hearty breakfast from Doc Taylor's. Known for its Southern cuisine and Bloody Marys, this local gem is tucked away in an old cottage. The fan-favorite Doc Taylor Breakfast Sandwich, complete with a fried egg, bacon, cheese, grilled parmesan tomatoes on an onion roll, and a side of grilled potatoes, costs just $11.49. Craving something sweet? Order Doctor Tuttle's French toast, which includes four thick-cut slices of toast with a sprinkle of powdered sugar, also for $11.49. Throw in a cup of coffee, tax, and tip, and your total comes to $18.
Mid-Morning (Total: $10)
Next is an excursion to one of my favorite Virginia parks: First Landing State Park. This Cape Henry beach is a treasure trove of Spanish moss, boardwalk trails, and a bayfront swimming beach with gentle waves perfect for even the youngest visitors. If you're in the mood for a true hike, the Osmanthus Trail is an easy three-mile trail that takes you to the heart of the cypress swamp. Parking at First Landing State Park is $10 per vehicle if you visit on a weekend between April and October. Otherwise, it's just $7.
Lunch (Total: $16 - $20)
For lunch, head to Taste at Bayville Farms. My favorite order is the Hilltop, a straightforward sandwich with oven-roasted turkey, provolone, and house dressing on French bread for just $9. You can make it a special to include chips (or an apple) and a drink for four more dollars. That, plus tax and tip, brings your total to $16.50. I love the atmosphere at Taste because there's tons of seating outside, and it's a fast-casual spot.
Pro tip: Spend an extra few dollars at the farmers' market right next to the Taste entrance and treat yourself to strawberries, watermelon, and other out-of-this-world local produce!
Afternoon ($7)
Stroll the ViBe Creative District on 18th Street between Cypress Avenue and Mediterranean Avenue. It's the city's artistic hub, with dozens of hand-painted murals, shops, and cafes. If you visit on a Saturday morning, you'll also browse some one-of-a-kind wares at the Old Beach Farmers Market. While you're in the neighborhood, be sure to stop by Fathom Coffee. They've got a killer pour-over and nitro cold brew if you need something refreshing. Drinks range from $3 - $9, and they sell small bites like biscotti or a chocolate croissant.
Late Afternoon (free)
In my opinion, no trip to Virginia Beach is complete without a stroll on the famous boardwalk. It's the best way to admire the waves and enjoy the ever-changing beachfront's energy. You'll get to see the city's iconic statues, like the King Neptune, and pass by bustling restaurants and bars.
Dinner ($25)
So much exploring is bound to work up an appetite, and fortunately, Virginia Beach has no shortage of excellent restaurants. One of our favorite places is Chick's Oyster Bar, especially if you can go for Happy Hour, served Mondays through Fridays from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. If you don't mind an earlier dinner, $25 can get you half a dozen oysters, a Chick's Beach Cheeseburger, and a Crush (one of the most iconic drinks in VA Beach).
Evening ($10)
There's no sweeter way to cap your day of adventures in Virginia Beach than a visit to the Sweet Spot. Decked out in pink, this dessert cafe specializes in homemade ice cream, churros, bubble waffles, and milkshakes. But you're here for the ice cream—specifically, two scoops on a waffle cone, which you can get for just under $10, factoring in tax and a tip. The Sweet Spot boasts 32 flavors to choose from, plus six vegan options, so find your favorite combination and prepare to be charmed.
Total Costs: $90
We left a little wiggle room in the budget if you need to pay for parking spots along the way. There are plenty of day-use parking garages and metered spots throughout the beachfront area and a few unmetered side streets that are free between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.
That concludes our fun-filled beach day! If you need an affordable and convenient place to stay, this Virginia Beach waterfront hotel is a quality option for exploring the area's best attractions.
