Anna Maria Island is a beautiful barrier island in the Gulf that stretches just over seven miles. It connects to Holmes Beach to the south, all the way down to Bradenton Beach, and then finally Coquina Beach before Longboat Pass bridge. All in all, it'll take you around 22 minutes to drive from one end of Anna Maria Island to the other, and yet, when you add all of the stops along the way it makes for the perfect day trip adventure. Not only will you have Gulf views, delicious restaurants, and tons of natural beauty along the way, but you also won't even need to waste a full tank of gas doing it all! Start at one end of the island for this day trip adventure. We like starting at Bean Point Beach, which is known for being a serene spot to set up a chair and an umbrella and enjoy the white sandy beaches.
Bean Point Beach is at the northern tip of the island and during the spring and summer months can have beautiful turquoise water and some pretty impressive sunset views.
After enjoying a slice of tropical paradise, head south along Gulf Drive to The Donut Experiment.
Here you’ll find a made-to-order donut shop where every donut is of your very own creation. Pair that with a hot coffee and you’re ready to tackle the rest of the trip!
If donuts are enough to hold you over for the day, not a problem. If you have a hankering for something else, we recommend swimming by The Ugly Grouper.
This is the place to be on Anna Maria Island, from morning to night. Enjoy fresh seafood, live music, and a fun, eclectic atmosphere.
Heading further south, you’ll eventually hit a popular scuba diving spot - Spanish Rocks Reef. This shore-accessible saltwater dive site is a real treat for anyone looking for a bit of adventure along the way. If scuba is not on the agenda, Holmes Beach is always a fan favorite to catch some sun.
Anyone who wants an afternoon cocktail as they catch the sunset can head further south to Beach House Restaurant. With an expansive deck, you can catch the entire show, while sipping on something frosty and cold.
If you want to spend the night on the island, too, there are so many different hotels and resorts to choose from. One of our favorites is Bali Hai Beachfront Resort & Spa, which is like having your own private tropical hideaway.
Whether you drive for an afternoon or make an entire weekend trip, head to Anna Maria Island for sunsets, fresh seafood, and beautiful Gulf views.
