This sapphire quarry in Mooresville typically kicks off its first open swim of the season on Memorial Day Weekend. Throughout the summer, the quarry will be open daily from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Just be sure to make a reservation first.

Located along the rolling base of Linville Gorge, Lake James offers open water scenery and pristine camping for those looking to escape the crowds. 8. Witness one of the oldest geological wonders in North Carolina
Few people realize that it's possible to hike to the top of Looking Glass Rock. Starting in Brevard, the Looking Glass Rock Trail off of Forest Heritage Scenic Byway lets you ascend 1,700 feet in just three miles. At the top, you'll be treated to stunning Blue Ridge Views as well as an up-close-and-personal view of the dome that makes this pluton monolith so eye-catching.
