Can’t Make It to Yosemite? South Carolina Has a 65-Foot Waterfall With Almost No Crowds
Bonus: the hike to get there is fairly easy.
If you’re a fan of chasing waterfalls (like me), then you know that each waterfall has a different look. Some are very narrow, some are incredibly wide… no two are alike! My favorite types of waterfalls are the bridal veil waterfalls, although a close second are the waterfalls you can walk behind.
Bridalveil Fall in Yosemite National Park is easily one of the most popular waterfalls of this style, but there are many of them peppered around the country, including one here in South Carolina! It may not be as tall as Yosemite’s, but it’s just as beautiful.
King Creek Falls is a 65-foot waterfall in South Carolina that’s perfect for an outdoor adventure. The waterfall is located in the Sumter National Forest, a 370,442-acre forest that’s a natural playground for hikers, bikers, ATV riders, campers, hunters, anglers, and more.
King Creek is a tributary of the Chattooga River in the northwest corner of the state, right on the Georgia-South Carolina border. Hiking the King Creek Falls Trail is the easiest way to get to the waterfall. It’s a 1.5-mile out-and-back trail that’s very easy to navigate. There is a parking lot at the trailhead, and there are a few different campgrounds nearby if you want to spend a few days exploring the other trails in the region.
There are other trails nearby, like the Foothills Trail, so just make sure you’re staying on the Kings Creek Trail. The trail isn’t difficult, but it’s definitely one you’ll want to watch your step on. There’s only 200 feet of elevation gain, but roots on the trail can easily cause you to stumble. Despite that, the trail is very well-maintained and accessible, thanks to the state park rangers.
After a short jaunt through the forest, you’ll arrive at King Creek Falls. The bridal veil-style waterfall clocks in at roughly 65 feet, and she’s a beauty! While it’s always best to visit waterfalls after a hard rain, King Creek Falls tends to stay beautiful almost year-round. I know it's not nearly as tall as Bridalveil Fall in Yosemite, but it's a similar style and, in my opinion, equally as beautiful. Plus, there are fewer crowds
The pool at the base of the waterfall is very shallow and perfect for a quick cool down. Pups, in particular, love to splash around. And in general, it's a pretty kid- and dog-friendly hike. Just keep in mind that the rocks can be very slippery, so make sure you’re careful. I always bring a pair of waterproof sandals (they’re a knock-off Tevas) that I can change into so I can walk into the water without worrying about something slimy touching my foot.
