What Makes This South Carolina Natural Wonder So Unique

If you didn't know there were gorges in South Carolina, then you are in for a big surprise! Let's get this adventure on the move:

National Geographic once referred to this natural attraction in South Carolina as one of the “World’s Last Great Places.” The 50,000-acre protected wilderness is filled with waterfalls, wildlife, and a mesmerizing mountain landscape that you have to see to believe.

The Grand Canyon is much larger than the Jocassee Gorges, covering well over a million acres of land and reaching 6,000 feet deep at its deepest point. The Jocassee Gorges cover only about 50,000 acres and have forested slopes dropping 2,000 vertical feet in elevation in a matter of one to two miles.

Both are natural playgrounds that offer endless opportunities for outdoor adventures. Whether you want to chase waterfalls or climb to the top of South Carolina’s highest peak, you can bet that you’ll never be bored. You can even go scuba diving here!

Where To Find This Hidden Gem In South Carolina

The Jocassee Gorges Wilderness Area is located in the northwestern part of South Carolina. It bleeds into both Pickens and Oconee counties and has endless access points. Lake Jocassee is one of the most popular places, but you’ll find plenty of hiking and biking trails within the Jocassee Gorges Wilderness Area.

Although many have never even heard of the Jocassee Gorges, the natural wonder was ranked 9th out of 50 by National Geographic as One of 50 of the World's Last Great Places.

Despite their similarities and differences, both natural wonders provide unquestionably spectacular views.

What It’s Like To Visit In Person
