Summer means getting lost outside and exploring the great outdoors! In New Hampshire, that means something extra-special. Adventures here can include unexpected hikes that lead to all sorts of natural attractions. Today we're featuring one of our favorite woodsy trips that begins with a hike and ends in a glorious waterfall swimming hole. It's not quite hidden, but it often does get overshadowed by places like Diana Baths. So it's time to lace up those hiking shoes, grab your backpack, and head out on the easy peasy Basin Trail in NH.
The Basin Cascade Trail is a 2.6-mile route leading to one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the state. You can choose your own adventure and only travel to the Basin, or travel along the river for even more waterfalls. To get to the Basin it is a short little hike but for more of a workout follow the signs leading you to even more waterfalls.
To find it, head to Franconia Notch State Park. This state park is one of the prettiest places in all of the state with towering mountains everywhere you look.
While there are a few trails that begin in the same area and cross each other, the one leading to the basin is well-marked. You will be traversing bridges and boardwalks, and following along lovely babbling brooks.
The elevation gain is about 626 feet, which gives the trail some sweat-inducing elements. But overall this is a simple trail that shouldn't present many problems for those who are mobile on their feet. There is even a wheelchair-accessible paved path for those who want to see the Basin. This is a rare feature for hiking trails in the White Mountains and a nice welcomed addition.
In addition to the fun waterfall you're heading towards, there are plenty of smaller falls along the way. Each one is gorgeous, especially when the sun is shining. After a big rainfall or when the snow is melting makes these waterfalls even more impressive.
The route also follows portions of the Pemigewasset River, making for even more lovely views. soak in the impressive mountains, marvel at the surrounding forest, and enjoy the sound of the flowing waters.
The water has been flowing over the rocks here for so long that a smooth surface has been created.
You will have plenty of views along the way but, soon enough you'll arrive at the basin, which is beautiful.
And just beneath is the crystal-clear natural pool. This massive pool swirls and flows making for one mesmerizing scene.
This is one hike you'll want to do over and over again!
The Basin Cascade Trail is accessible year-round, but it's considered best between May and November. Have you ever hiked the basin trail in NH? Have you ever followed the river and seen all of the waterfalls? If you haven't been then now is a great time to pack those bags and make this one unforgettable trip. Don't forget to bring the pups, just be sure to keep them leashed. For more information about not just this trail but many others please visit the Franconia Notch State Park page.
