Rattlesnake Mountain Sounds Scary, But It’s One of the Best Hikes in New Hampshire
Rattlesnake Mountain sounds like a scary hike in New Hampshire, but you're much more likely to see scenic views than fanged reptiles on this trek into the clouds.
There's nothing as exciting as a hike into the great unknown, but hiking a mountain or rural trail always comes with some challenges, including uneven terrain, steep overlooks — and of course, the wildlife. So Rattlesnake Mountain sounded like a scary hike in New Hampshire, conjuring images of the creepy-crawly reptiles lurking under every rock as I try to conquer the summit. Fortunately, I looked a little deeper, because this is actually a safe and exciting hike, perfect for those who want to take on a bigger hiking challenge in a safe environment.
Located in the beautiful White Mountain National Forest, the Rattlesnake Mountain Trail is an ideal mix of a challenging hike that's still accessible enough to be welcoming to those who aren't expert mountain climbers. Located in one of the more rural areas of the Granite State, it's rarely crowded with hikers, and it features some of the best views in the whole state. It's the kind of adventure that takes a little courage to take on for the first time — but those who do will be rewarded.
Why Is It Called the Rattlesnake Mountain Trail?
No surprise, Rattlesnake Mountain was initially named because of the presence of rattlesnakes! New Hampshire is home to one species of the venomous serpent, the Timber Rattlesnake. However, while the species is not overall endangered, it's considered critically endangered in New Hampshire and is very rare to encounter these days. That leaves the name a spooky relic of the pre-European settlement days, and the mountain one of the best spots in White Mountain National Forest.
What the Hike Is Actually Like
Today, Rattlesnake Mountain is best known for its 2.4-mile loop trail, which takes you to the top of the 1,594-foot mountain. The trail gets a moderate rating from AllTrails and boasts a 935-foot elevation gain. That makes it a challenging hike where you'll find some rocky terrain to navigate, but the hike is well-maintained and leads you to the summit, where you'll get some of the best views in this region of New Hampshire.
What to Know Before You Go
The hike will typically take around two hours to navigate fully, and some areas in the middle can be steep. You'll want to bring a good navigation app like AllTrails + in order to find your way in some of the less-marked areas towards the end. White Mountain National Forest is open year-round 24-7, and it mostly caters to adventure hikers. You can hike during any season, but winter poses extra challenges that make this an advanced hike. We recommend having a good pair of hiking boots and some experience in the area before taking on this trek!
Is the Rattlesnake Mountain Trail Worth Hiking?
This isn't a beginner's hike, as it features some steep portions and rocky terrain that take concentration to navigate. However, its beautiful vistas make it one of the true hidden gems of the New Hampshire mountains, and it's rarely crowded like some of the state's most popular peaks. For those willing to take on the challenge, it's one of the best hikes in New Hampshire.
