Hell’s Half Acre Loop Sounds Scary, But It’s One of the Best Hikes in Idaho

Located in the most unexpected spot next to Interstate 15, just five miles east of Blackfoot, is a trail with a name that may make you think twice about taking your first step. It is the Hell’s Half Acre Loop, and while it certainly sounds intimidating, it is actually one of the best family-friendly hikes in southeast Idaho. With a short distance, fascinating volcanic landscape, and close proximity to the freeway, it is the perfect road trip stop. It's not the scary hiking trail in Idaho that its name suggests.

Why Is It Called Hell’s Half Acre?

Located at the South Exit of the Blackfoot Rest Area along Interstate 15, you will find the edge of Hell’s Half Acre, a designated National Natural Landmark and Wilderness Study Area. Here, you’ll feel like you are walking through a Hawaiian landscape (or even the devil’s playground), rather than Idaho. This area is home to hardened lava flows that are believed to be more than 4,100 years old and cover more than 220 miles or 162,000 acres. It's a space that feels desolate and remote, but it’s actually home to all types of vegetation and even wildlife of all sizes. It’s also where you’ll find a handful of trails, including the Hell’s Half Acre Loop.

What the Hike Is Actually Like

The Hell’s Half Acre Loop is the perfect place to stretch your legs as you travel on I-15. The trailhead is located at the rest area and near multiple picnic tables where you can relax for a few minutes before exploring this unique Idaho landscape. The trail is less than one mile and extremely easy to follow. There’s very little elevation gain, and if you complete the trail in its entirety, it’ll take you approximately 30 minutes—the perfect break before you hop back on the road and continue your drive.

This paved trail winds through the hardened lava flows. Plants ranging in all sizes grow in the volcanic landscape along your way, which is truly impressive as the hardened lava seems so desolate that you wouldn’t think anything could grow there. You’ll find everything from cacti to ferns growing near the trail, and in the summer months, wildflower blooms will add pops of color as well.

I recommend you take your time as you hike and spend time reading the informational signs that line your route. Keep an eye out for wildlife as well, especially during the summer months, as you never know what may come your way, like snakes on hot summer days. Sunrise and sunset are also beautiful on this family-friendly hike in southeast Idaho as the colorful skies add even more stunning scenery to the black lava rock that surrounds you.

What To Know Before You Go

This trail is easy to find and access—no permits are needed. There’s ample parking at the rest area and picnic areas, especially for large vehicles such as trucks and trailers. Despite the short distance of this trail, make sure to bring plenty of water and sun protection as there is no shade and the black lava rock can feel especially hot on a summer afternoon. Additionally, keep in mind that no motorized vehicles are allowed within the Lava Trail system.
