The Iconic Trail in New Hampshire Everyone Should Hike Once in Their Lifetime

The latter is certainly true of the Mount Willard Trail, one of the most highly recommended hikes in New Hampshire. This 3.1-mile out-and-back trek isn't for the faint of heart. Located near Bretton Woods, New Hampshire, the Mount Willard Trail promises a big reward after a moderately challenging climb. The climb, while it is tough, is suitable for beginners. You'll gain nearly 895 feet over the course of the ascent. The hike follows an old carriage road. It's easy to navigate but quite rocky in places. It's recommended that all hikers come prepared with sturdy hiking boots and plenty of water.

As is true with most popular New Hampshire hikes, this one gets crowded mid-day. If you can, try to arrive early so you can complete the trek before noon. Or even better, hike on a weekday instead of a weekend. In the fall, trail conditions begin to get icy in and around the White Mountains, so prepare accordingly.

The path winds through a forest of birch, beech, and maple trees. It's particularly great for leaf peeping during the fall foliage season. Along the way, you'll cross a few small streams and encounter delightful glimpses of the surrounding wilderness. The real highlight, however, is the summit. It opens up to a stunning view of Crawford Notch, a U-shaped valley carved by glaciers, offering a dramatic and unforgettable snapshot of the region's rugged beauty.

The trail generally takes hikers about two to two-and-a-half hours to complete, but you'll want to factor in some extra time for admiring the view.
