Welcome The Official Arrival Of Winter On This Sunrise Solstice Hike In Missouri
Winter’s official arrival will be here before we know it. For some of us that means wishing for long snowy days spent outdoors sledding, tubing, and skiing while others continue the countdown to spring. Regardless of what camp you’re in, you’ll find that winter rivals summer with its many fun outdoor activities – like this sunrise solstice hike in Imperial, Missouri.
Celebrate the official start of winter with a refreshing sunrise solstice hike, a free interpretive program, at Mastodon State Historic Site in Imperial on Dec. 21, 2023.
Led by a seasoned guide, the winter hike will set off from the picnic area at the historic site at 7 a.m. If that sounds early, consider that the shortest day of the year will have just seven hours and 14 minutes of daylight.
Even though the short but sweet Spring Branch Trail clocks in at just .08 of a mile, be sure to dress for the weather and wear sturdy shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty. The flat trail is comprised of packed gravel.
If it has snowed or rain, the trail can get a bit messy.
While the group strolls along the picturesque path, the guide will lead a discussion about the winter solstice as you await the sunrise, which is expected at 7:15 a.m. on Dec. 21, 2023.
Bring your camera to snap photos of the local wildlife, flowing creek, and maybe even a sensational first morning of winter sunrise.
While the program is free, you must register in advance by calling 636-464-2976 or by going online.
Check out the official website of Mastodon State Historic Site to learn more and plan your visit.
