A Trip To This Fossil Park In Missouri Is An Adventure Like No Other

Missouri has so many fascinating tales to tell, including one that will give you a glimpse into prehistoric times. This fossil park in Missouri features so much to do - from exploring a museum packed with artifacts to meandering along winding hiking trails - that you should probably plan to spend a good chunk of your day here. You might not be able to pack it all in an entire day either.

A day at Mastodon State Historic Site in Imperial promises a one-of-a-kind experience no matter what's on your itinerary - picnicking, hiking, or watching the kids at the playground.

The 431-acre state historic site is home to the Kimmswick Bone Bed, where scientists uncovered evidence to show that humans and American mastodons co-existed in North America at the same time.

If you're visiting when the museum is open, start there. Get acquainted with the historic site, including the bone bed, by viewing the interpretive video. It will make your visit to the museum and the grounds even more fascinating.

The museum is open all year round, although hours vary according to season. A nominal admission fee is required. Visitors 12 years and younger get in free.

Be sure to stroll through the museum to check out the exhibits and artifacts, including a replica of a mastodon skeleton.

The best way to explore outdoors, where the fossils in the museum were found, is along one of the scenic trails.

Clocking in at .08 of a mile, the Spring Branch Trail is wheelchair-accessible and is considered easy. The trail wanders past the remnants of the Bollefer Springhouse, perfect for snapping photos.

The half-mile Wildflower Trail, particularly pretty in the spring, offers views of the bone bed, including an educational placard.

If you're up for a bit of a challenge, the longest trail Limestone Hill Trail spans two miles and features rough terrain and plenty of inclines. However, it will lead you through lush forested areas.

You can easily spend a day or more - you'll probably return again - at this unique Missouri park. Sit back and take a breather while the kiddos play at the playground.

Bring lunch along, too, for a picnic at one of the picnic tables. The park also has water fountains and vault toilets.
