The Dune Hike in Missouri That Everyone Should Take at Least Once

This famous dune hike in Missouri features an unforgettable highlight. Here’s what to expect and why it’s worth the visit.

I’m in awe of the Show-Me State. On every trek through, I find a new jewel, sapphire waters in the Ozark springs, emerald leaves in the forest, and now, golden sand on a dune hike in Missouri. Most people don’t know there’s such a place, and that’s why I’m here. I’m a sucker for hidden gems, and if no one has heard of it, I’ll be there at dawn. Today, it is the Sand Prairie Conservation Area, a tiny and rare ecosystem, in the far southeast corner of the state.

Where This Dune Hike In Missouri Is and Why It’s Worth It

Sand Prairie Conservation Area probably isn’t the spot you’d write home about. It doesn’t boast the best hikes in Missouri if you're after distance, elevation gain, or epic vistas—especially not if you are seeking the best waterfalls in Missouri. But if you appreciate rare and unexpected native plants and animals, and a slow, easy trek, you’re in the right spot. These Missouri dunes barely reach 12 feet in height at their peak, and are hidden just 30 minutes from Cape Girardeau, a sleepy river town in the extreme southeastern part of the state. It's worth the detour to see such a contrasting landscape, and one with incredible ecological significance as one of the last remnants of high-quality sand prairie in Missouri.

The Features You Won’t Want to Miss

Although small, the dunes are still fascinating, golden hills riddled with tall grass, cactus, and oodles of wonderful critters and plant life. The northern bobwhite is a dune quail that’s abundant here, and so is the prairie racerunner, a 7-striped whiptail lizard. Because of the chance to see both of them in a healthy, native habitat, I think it’s the best place for a sand dune hike. Missouri is home to a few other sand dune hikes in the state, but in my opinion, the half-mile Sand Prairie Trail at the Sand Prairie Conservation Area is the only one that remotely meets sand dune expectations.

What It’s Like to Hike This Trail

alt

To be fully transparent, calling this unmarked, unmaintained path an actual trail is quite a stretch, and it’s not one of the most scenic hikes in Missouri. But its wildness is also why I love it so much. It invites one to wander casually, to look closely at one's feet, and to take a moment to imagine what life might have been like here 2 million years ago. That’s likely when the sand was deposited here during the great glacial melt. It might’ve been a glacial river or even a glacial ocean, but today it’s a tiny pocket of dune paradise filled with prickly pear cactus, lizards, quail, and dune savanna grasses.

The Sand Prairie Conservation Area is a hidden gem in Missouri, best visited while traveling nearby in the southeast Ozarks or to the Shawnee National Forest. It probably wouldn’t be the best option for a stand-alone visit, unless you’re a conservation connoisseur. It’s very small, and most visitors would spend under an hour here, but it’s worth seeing if you are already in the area.
